Purpose & Method: ‘The International Olympic Committee (IOC)’ has been planning a project for an educational approach of the Olympics, and it has been implementing its ‘Olympic Values Education Program (OVEP)’ in various countries since 2007. The ultimate goal of the OVEP, which has been devised to help the youth maintain their interest in sports, encourage their participation in sports and promote the values of the Olympics, is to educate the youth about common ethical values included in the spirit of the Olympics and implicative values through sports that can bring benefits to our society to help the world move forward towards a more hopeful world. The five core educational values emphasized in the OVEP are joy of effort, fair play, respect for others, pursuit of excellence and balance between body, will, mind. They are not only the tradition and values of the Olympic sports but also include or connected to common values on character education. Accordingly, they are appropriate to be practically applied to our circumstance considering the direction of educational policy of our country or the goal of our physical education. First off, they share the same direction with the direction of revision of 2015 Curriculum that emphasized character education along with cultivation of humanities & social knowledge. In addition, there is a thread of connection between them and the goal of school education aiming to educate core competencies to have the concept of essential abilities to successfully live future lives. In particular, physical education curriculum of our country as a ‘curriculum focusing on the value of physical activities’, has been striving to obtain and internalize unique and educationally desirable values included in the experience of physical activities through physical activity education, namely education on the physical education subject education. The physical activity values that have been established namely, health, challenge, competition, expression and leisure became the basic foundation for establishing the subject competencies of the 2015 Revised Physical Education Curriculum, and the physical education subject competencies of health management capability, physical training capability, sports event performance capability and physical expression capability consist of very similar contents to the educational values pursued in the OVEP. As a summer & winter Olympics host nation, our country also needs to spread the cultural and educational values of the Olympics to the public to seek various socio-culturally positive effects by going beyond the economic effects. Accordingly, it is necessary to provide an opportunity in the physical education in school with a similar educational direction as the very pivot to experience the values of the OVEP. Accordingly, this study analyzed and referred to the OVEP implementation cases by reflecting the meaning and values of the OVEP to examined the possibility of applying them in the field of physical education in school of our country. Result & Conclusion: The findings are as follow. First, education on the Olympic values can be applied in lessons related to such values by analyzing the core concepts, generalized knowledge and content areas & specific contents of the physical education curriculum. Since there are many similarities between the 2015 Revised Physical Education Curriculum areas & contents and the five core values of the OVEP, there is an educational potential going beyond convergence. In particular, the definition contents in specific areas share the same objective to the point of being able to actively utilize the standard manual presented in the OVEP. Second, educational effects can be increased by interconnecting and applying the achievement standards according to related curriculum content areas related to the methods presented in the teaching manual being used as a tool of value education in the OVEP. In addition, educational effects on the Olympics and the Olympic values can be naturally expected through the Olympic related cases and tools that were used in the education of physical education subject. Third, experiential educational effects on the Olympic values can be expected through active sports experiential activities such as creative experiential activities of school sports club. Most of all, the 2015 Revised Physical Education Curriculum that will be applied right after the end of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics can be considered as the most timely appropriate situation where the OVEP can be applied and extensive education on the Olympic values can be provided. In addition, physical education in school that is provided as an mandatory education is an opportunity with very high potential of spreading the effects. Accordingly, it would be necessary to develop manuals for specific utilization or reference materials to more actively contribute to the positive change of the society through the Olympics.
