In Japan, there have been a lot of natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanos since old times. They are easily found in history recording, and the record about an earthquake in 400s can be considered as the first one. These natural disasters often appear not only in history and essay but also in Monogatari(tales). Natural disasters are described as they are in history books or essays, but in Monogatari, purpose and intention are important. In epic accounts that have historic events as setting, especially in 『The Tale of the Heike』, fires and earthquakes appear. When compared with 『Hojogi』, a contemporary work that describes the same disasters, 『The Tale of the Heike』 shows different description of disasters. In 『Hojogi』, an essay, the situation of disasters occurring, whole story and damage situations are objectively described, and the author`s personal opinions and what the author felt about the change after disasters happened are described slightly. It is obvious that earthquakes are simply earthquakes, but there is no relation with incidents before and after. On the contrary in 『The Tale of the Heike』, while fires and earthquakes that actually happened are described, the meaning is given to the incidents. A fire that happened in Angen 3 is described as divine punishment of god in Hiyoshi shrine, and a typhoon and earthquake that happened in Jisho 3 are described as sign of incidents that would happen later. What is intended to say in this study is the purpose of described disasters and the reason of non-described disasters. Disasters in the past were interpreted as God`s realm. There was tendency of viewing comet in addition to natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes as a sign of ominous incident. It was normal to tell fortunes through yin and yang, and Shingigwan. In 『The Tale of the Heike』, natural disasters that actually happened are arranged according to purposes and situations, so they function as emphasis of the theme. At the same time, the work excludes disasters that actually happened but that do not match the theme. The disasters described in 『The Tale of the Heike』 contains the sign `Because servants do not behave themselves, big disasters occur.` This sign starts to appear when Heike family`s fortune starts to go downhill. The earthquakes and typhoon that happened when the family`s fortune was at the peak are not mentioned. That`s because they don`t have the value in use for `sign`. 『The Tale of the Heike』 tells the principles of `seong ja pil soi`, which means a successful person should fail, and of je hae mu sang, which means nothing stays the same, through rise and fall. The work tells the end of a person who has power but is arrogant and scornful, and wants salvation and relief through Buddhism in the chaotic times. The natural disasters in 『The Tale of the Heike』 play a role in gathering readers` attention. In the attention gathering, it is obvious that not only is the theme of the work highlighted, but also the phases of the times are reflected.
