Robert Musil (1880-1942), an Austrian writer, published in 1924 Three Women, a collection of three short stories. These are "Grigia," "The portuguese Lady," and "Tonka." Although the titles identify the women in the stories, the main characters of the stories are men: Homo, the patriarch of the Ketten family, and an anonymous ''he:' respectively. The stories present the crises of these three men confronted by the women whom they love. The love stories imply at a deeper level some problems of nature similar to those discussed in modem ecology, such as the human-centered perspective, instrumental rationalism, mind-body dualism, and the equivalent treatment of women and nature as the other. This paper investigates these implications, analyzing the work in its symbolic usages and arguing by utilizing some discourses in ecocology and ecocriticism.<br/>
Musil's stories do not present nature exactly as modern ecological literature does, where, for example, the destruction of nature is given critical attention or a vision of ecological society is shown. Nature in "Grigia" symbolizes a mysterious place where the man Homo can recover a lost natural part of himself, a process presented as a mystical union of love. At the same time, the danger of the self-destruction of human beings is warned against when they manipulate nature for their instrumental interests. Here, women and nature are represented as metaphorically interlinked, as the others that Homo in particular has to deal with and that bring him into danger of death. In "The Portuguese Lady," nature is thematized as physical, corporeal human nature, which the patriarch Ketten has to accept as part of himself. He has to go through several stages of physical ordeal to assure himself of his love for his wife and of her love for him. The symbolic meanings of the two animals(wolf and cat) appearing in the story convey humans' animality and their equality with animals. In the story "Tonka:' the anonymous man, a scientist, goes through a change in his understanding of nature that reflects the paradigm shift in the natural sciences of the nineteen-twenties. Parallel with this process, he comes to understand Tonka and her love in an awakening moment that he experiences only after her death. Tonka is presented as belonging to a world of myth that he can understand only when he changes his attitude for approaching the world. His rational approach toward both Tonka and nature is shown as limited, and this shifts us toward an appropriate apprehension of nature and the other in a relationship.
