Determinants of COVID-19 Preventive Behaviour among
University students in the Seoul Metropolitan Area
: Based on the Health Belief Model
This study was intended to investigate determinants of COVID-19 preventive behaviours against COVID-19 spreading around the world recently by targeting university students having the characteristics of engaging in active social activities and having many asymptomatic confirmed cases in the metropolitan area with high population density. To this end, the attitudes of university students in the metropolitan area towards preventive behaviours attitudes against COVID 19, and the factors affecting the compliance to preventive behaviours were analyzed. The data from an online survey conducted on 300 university students in the metropolitan area who joined the membership in Embrain Panel Power, an online search company, was used by creating a scale using the variables of the health belief model.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, in the attitudes towards COVID-19 and preventive behaviour, female students felt the susceptibility, seriousness and threat about COVID-19 greater than male students, and students in poor subjective health felt the threats of COVID-19 greater than the students in good health, and they felt that the benefits of taking preventive behaviours were small, whereas the disability was large. It is judged that these results were based on that characteristics that the threat of the disease vary depending on the level of the perception on the state of the body, and that men take more risks than women.
In cues to action factors, it was found that they were more sensitive to COIVD 19 when there were confirmed cases around them. At this time, the seriousness and threat were found to be insignificant, and it is judged that the threat was affected by the two variables of susceptibility and seriousness, and the threat did not show significant result when only susceptibility was satisfied whereas the seriousness was not satisfied.
Next, in the factors that affect the compliance to social distancing, the higher the sense of self-efficacy and perceived benefits, the higher the compliance to social distancing; and the higher the perceived threat, sense of self-efficacy, and perceived benefits, the higher the compliance to hand washing, indicating that the higher the threat of COVID-19, the higher the compliance to handwashing, but even if the threat increases, it does not affect the compliance to social distancing. In college students in their twenties, even if the threat of COVID 19 was great, it did not affect the compliance to social distancing, which was considered to be due to their characteristics that they engage in active social activities, while concerning about hand hygiene.
Finally, it was tried to investigate the moderating effect of cues to action on the attitude that affects the compliance to preventive behaviours, but there was no moderating effect, indicating the degree of compliance to preventive behaviours does not increase because they felt the threat of COIVD 19 because of the presence of confirmed cases and the degree of reaction of the surrounding people, but the moment they felt the threat of COIVD 19, it directly affects the compliance to preventive behaviours.
In order to increase the compliance to preventive behaviours, it is necessary to raise the threat of Corona 19 by proving information or promoting campaign so that they feel COVID 19 is threatening rather than simply proving information about COVID19, and also inform them of the benefits from taking preventive behaviours at the same time. In addition, in order to raise the sense of self-efficacy that affects the compliance to preventive behaviours, it is necessary to help them experience preventive behaviours, give positive encouragement, and let them find a role model around them through education.
