사설시조 종장의 의성어·의태어 실현 양상과 그 시적 의미 = A Study on the Usage of Mimetic Words in the Final Sections of Saseolsijo

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to contrast the usage of mimetic words in the final sections of Pyeongsijo(平時調) and Saseolsijo(辭說時調), to identify the driving force behind the complex rhythmic and grammatical structure of the final section of Saseolsijo, and to examine the influence of this structure on the concluding style of Saseolsijo. This study seeks to support the findings of previous research that Saseolsijo reflects a paradigm shift in the perception of travel literature by examining the formalization of the final section of Saseolsijo in response to the realization of mimetic words, which reflects changes like the poetic subject and the attitudes of the subject who perceives and represents it.
Mimetic words in the final section of Pyeongsijo are rarely realized as adverbs. They are more commonly realized as derived verbs/adjectives or abbreviated forms and play a role as predicates. Even when they are used as adverbs, they are often realized as disyllabic or in abbreviated forms with omitted dependent words. This is because the formal constraints of Pyeongsijo result in limited usage and avoidance of adverbs. The effort to maintain the rhythmic and grammatical structure of the final section of Pyeongsijo has led to a phenomenon of adverb avoidance.
In the final section of Saseolsijo, mimetic words are even more frequently realized as adverbs. This is because the attitude of the subject is focused on specifying the nature of the object and depicting its actions, emphasizing the concreteness of the statement. This leads to a crack in the rhythmic and grammatical structure, resulting in works that follow the formal structure and those that deviate from it, representing a variety of styles. This can also lead to a trend in which efforts to vary the structure become dominant.
Such rhythmic and grammatical variations lead to an expansion of the predicate. Mimetic words are derived into verbs or adjectives, creating new predicates and elongating the predicate with a focus on mimetic words. Furthermore, the final section of Saseolsijo, based on the expansion of the predicate, tends to conclude the poem by represent the inner state of the subject arising from special experiences that are difficult to establish as nouns or acquire universal meaning. It is found that there is a tendency to reproduce an object that has been objectified and an instant experience. This is one of the ways of expressing the inner state of the subject that has encountered an uncertain world, and it can be interpreted that the expansion of the predicate was requested in the process of doing so.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 평시조와 사설시조 종장에서 의성어나 의태어가 실현되는 양상을 대비하여 사설시조 종장의 율격·통사 구조가 복잡해진 동력을 파악하고 그것이 사설시조의 시상 종결 방식에 미친 영향을 고찰하는 데에 논의의 목적을 두었다. 의성어·의태어 실현에 따른 사설시조 종장의 장형화는 시적 대상의 성격 변화와 그것을 인식, 표상하는 주체의 태도 변화를 반영한 것임을 규명함으로써 사설시조가 이행기 문학의 인식론적 전환을 보여 준다고 한 선행 연구의 성과를 뒷받침하려 한 것이다.
평시조 종장에서 의성어나 의태어는 좀처럼 부사어로 실현되지 않는다. 파생동사/형용사 혹은 그 생략형으로 실현되어 서술어 역할을 담당하는 경우가 높은 비중을 차지하는 것이다. 부사어로 쓰이더라도 2음절의 첩어 형태나 피수식어가 생략된 형태로 실현될 때가 많다. 평시조 종장의 율격·통사적 정형을 지키려는 힘이 강하여 그 활용이 제약된 까닭에 부사어 기피 현상이 나타났다고 할 수 있다.
사설시조 종장에서 의성어나 의태어는 부사어로 더욱 빈번하게 실현된다. 그 근저에는 대상의 성격을 부연하거나 행위 묘사에 주력하는, 즉 진술의 구체성을 지향하는 주체의 태도가 자리한 것으로 보인다. 이로 인해 율격·통사적 정형에 균열이 발생하면서 정형을 계승한 작품과 정형에서 벗어난 작품이 다채로운 양상을 구현한다. 오히려 평시조 종장이 구현한 정형을 변주하려는 힘이 우세해지는 양상을 드러낸다.
이상과 같은 율격·통사적 변이는 술어의 확장을 수반한다. 의성어와 의태어가 동사나 형용사로 파생되면서 새로운 술어가 산출되기도 하고, 다른 문장 성분을 수식하면서 술부가 길어지기도 하는 것이다. 나아가 여기에 기반하여 직조된 사설시조의 종장은 아직 명사로 정립되지 않았거나 보편적 의미를 획득하기 어려운 특수한 경험 및 그것에서 비롯하는 주체의 내면을 재현하는 방식으로 시상을 종결하는 경향이 있다. 이는 기존의 인식 범주가 힘을 발휘할 수 없게 된 시대에 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 복잡한 현실과 다양한 경험을 인식하고 표상하기 위한 수단을 모색하려 한 이행기 문학의 특징을 드러낸 것으로 해석된다.
