‘東國眞體’ 정신의 계승과 그 永久的 명칭의 摸索 = A Pursuit for the Succession to the Spirit of Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體)’ and for Its Permanent Name

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 그동안 서예학계에서 ‘東國眞體’ 명칭문제에 혼선이 있었던 점에 주목하고, ‘東國’과 ‘朝鮮’이란 명칭의 적부성에 결론을 내림과 동시에, 현재와 미래에 동국진체 정신을 계승한 성과가 출현할 경우 그것을 포괄할 수 있는 영구적인 명칭을 모색하고자 시도되었다. 더불어 동국진체의 제반 특성을 종합적으로 밝히고 그것을 바탕으로 동국진체에 관한 일반적 인식의 오류를 바로잡고자 하였다. ‘東國’이란 용어는 이 땅의 역사, 땅, 민족을 아우르는 포괄적 용어이다. 東國이란 명칭에 眞體를 추구한다는 의미의 ‘동국진체’는 17, 18세기에 출현하였지만 내용상으로는 고대부터 조선까지의 서예적 담론을 대변하고 있다. ‘東國眞體’란 명칭을 ‘朝鮮眞體’로 변경할 수 없는 이유는 첫째, 역사적으로 ‘조선’이란 국호가 箕子朝鮮에 뿌리를 두고 출현한 용어로서 동국진체가 지닌 주체적 특성을 대변할 수 없다는 것, 둘째, 옥동의『필결』은 서예사에 대한 통시적 입장에서 서예의 본질을 서술한 것으로, ‘조선’이란 한 왕조에 국한된 이론이 아니라는 것, 셋째, 학자의 논리는 근거에 의한 객관성의 획득이 관건이므로 자의적인 명칭변경은 설득력을 얻기 어렵다는 점 등이다. 한편 17,18세기 동국진체 서가의 행보에서 드러난 공통분모를 개혁성으로 파악하였고, 그것을 19세기 이삼만, 김정희에게서도 확인하였다. 따라서 동국진체 서가의 범주를 기존의 李漵, 尹斗緖, 尹淳, 李匡師에서 李三晩, 金正喜로 확장하였다. 동국진체는 단순한 서체가 아닌 이론과 실제가 융합된 서예모델이라는 점에서 한국서예사상 특수한 가치가 있다. 그것은 서가 각자의 철학적 논의와 예술적 관점과 서예적 변인들이 용해된 지적 결정체로서, “동국진체는 서체보다 정신이 우선이다” 라는 명제가 가능하다. 따라서 동국진체의 계승이란 서예의 이상적 본질에 관한 깊은 천착을 요구하는 것으로, 단지 서가의 글씨를 모방하는 것과는 큰 거리가 있다. ‘동국진체’를 포함하면서 현재와 미래의 한국적 서예정신을 상징하는 영구적 명칭으로 ‘韓國眞體’를 상정하였다. 이는 한국적 서예를 부각시킴과 동시에 한국서예사의 주체적 기반을 확립하고 체계적으로 기술하려는 목적 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

With paying attention to a point that a problem of name ‘Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體)’ has been crossed in the meantime, this study was attempted in order not only to make a conclusion of the fitness for a name titled ‘Dongguk(東國)’ and ‘Joseon(朝鮮)’ but also to seek a permanent name available for comprehending it given the appearance of an outcome that succeeds to the spirit of Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) at present and in the future. In addition, the aim was to synthetically clarify all the characteristics of Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) and to correct the mistake of general recognition on Dongguk-jinche based on it. Terminology dubbed Dongguk(東國)’ is the comprehensive one that encompasses history, territory and people of this land. Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) with a meaning of pursuing Jinche(眞體) in a name dubbed Dongguk(東國) appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries, but speaks for a calligraphic discourse from ancient times to Joseon in light of contents. In terms of the reasons that a name dubbed Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) cannot be changed into Joseon-jinche(朝鮮眞體), there are, first, what the country name called
Joseon is the terminology that appeared with having a root in Gijajoseon(箕子朝鮮) historically, thereby being unable to represent a subjective characteristic that Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) has, second, what Ok Dong s『Pilgyeol』narrated the essence of calligraphy in a diachronic position on calligraphic history, thereby being not a theory that
is limited to one dynasty called ‘Joseon,’ third, what a scholar s logic is a key point to acquire objectivity based on a ground, thereby being difficult for an arbitrary name change to obtain persuasive power. In the meantime, it grasped a common denominator, which was revealed in the walk of life in the calligraphers of Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) in the 17th and 18th centuries, and confirmed it even in Lee Sam-man and Kim Jeong-hui in the 19th century. Accordingly, a
category in the calligraphers of Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) was broadened into Lee Sam-man and Kim Jeong-hui from existing Lee Seo, Yun Du-seo, Yun Sun, and Lee Gwang-sa. Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) has a special value in a regard of being a calligraphic model of being converged theory and practice, not simple calligraphy. It is the intelligent crystal that is dissolved each calligrapher s philosophical discussion, artistic perspective, and calligraphic variables. Thus, it is possible in the proposition as saying that “Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) gives priority over spirit rather than handwriting.” Hence, the succession to Dongguk-jinche(東國眞體) implies to request deep excavation of ideal essence in calligraphy, thereby being far from simply imitating a calligrapher s handwriting. Hanguk-jinche(韓國眞體) was presented as a permanent name that symbolizes the Korean-style calligraphic spirit at present and in the future including Dongguk-jinche(東國 眞體). This is because of aiming to establish the subjective foundation in the Korean calligraphic history as well as highlighting the Korean-style calligraphy.
