Ⅰ. The following are the three major objectives treated in this thesis.
a. With the collection and analysis of the old folk beliefs and their influence on the way of life of the primitive people, the writer tried to find out their effect on our modern society and the solution for the problems the modern society has.
b. It is generally believed that the contents of literary works have a close relation with the folklore of the age in which the stories are written. Then the folklore of an age, as a background of a literary work, must be understood for correct appreciation and analysis of a literary work. Therefore, the writer tried in this thesis to give readers of the classical literature the correct knowledge of the old folklore and be of assistance to open a way for the folkloric literary criticism : a new venture.
c. The old folklore is at a point of extinction in the present day, and unless some surviving folklore be investigated and preserved at least in a record, they would be entirely forgotten forever. Therefore, it was the writer's intention, though it was limitted area wise, to investigate some folklores that have been handed down among the villagers from the ancient time to the present.
Ⅱ. The object of the writer's investigation was the old village ritual, The village traditional ritual, which has a close bond with the fate of the members of the community, has been regarded as one of the surviving rituals of the primitive way of life. Therefore, even in the age of science which changes our way of daily life so rapidly, in some of the farm countries, fishing villages and out of the way villages in the deep mountains, the village traditional ritual is regarded as the most important annual feast.
As a result of the investigation, it was found that 28% of the 82 villages in the vicinity of the Chilkap (七甲) Mount., Chyong-yang (靑陽) Country, Choongnam (忠南) Province, the area the writer selected for the investigation, is still observing the village traditional ritual as an annual event. The village traditional ritual of the area could be classified into following three group:
a. San-Sin-Jea. Mountain spirit ritual (山神祭)
b. Jang-Sung-Jea. Devil post ritual(長丞祭)
c. Dong-wha-jea. Village bonfire ritual (洞火祭)
With regard to the above three types of village traditional ritual the following further investigations were made:
a) Object of the ritual god
b) Site of the feast or the devil post
c) Form of the feast or the devil post
d) Date of the feast and the method of selecting the date
e) Method of selecting the shaman or magician
f) Prerequisites of the shaman
g) Taboos for the shaman
h) Expenses for the feast
i) Offerings and taboos
j) Receptacles used in the feast and taboos
k) Common taboos in the village
l) Prerequisites of the participants of the feast and taboos
m) Order of observing the feast
n) Details of the feast
o) Required time for the feast
p) Closing of the feast
q) Village meeting
r) Villager's attitude toward the feast
s) Folk legend about the village traditional ritual t) Others
As an effect of the above investigation, it was learned that the villagers are still believing in the old belief of spirit or animatism, dynamisme mystique, ritualism, naturheiligtu¨mer, anthrophism, symbolischer zauber, sulialism, etc.
Ⅲ. As a conclusion, the effect of the village traditonal ritual could be determined that the village traditonal ritual reinforces cohesiveness among the villagers themselves and supplement the sense of emptiness or solve the sense of helplessness of human being by turning one's fate to the ethnic god of the community. But the flow of the foreign beliefs into such traditional indigenous beliefs brought conflict not only between the alien beliefs but also among the villagers themselves. Therefore, whether the villagers could be united or keep on antagonizing each other and form heterogeneous anti-groups among themselves depends on how such alien beliefs should be adjusted. Such problem is not only the villagers' alone but also the social leaders' and government's which must be solved without delay. And in the solving of such problem, the social leaders and the government must first of all have correct understanding and the realities of the village traditional ritual.
