This thesis is to inquire into the effect of group art therapy using picture story making activity on the self-esteem of the low-income children. The subject was 8 children, who were selected among the students attending an after-school class in J Social Welfare Center located in S city, and who wanted to participate in this group art therapy program. The four students were arranged as test group, and the rest four children were arranged as control group, by random sampling. For the test group. this group art therapy program was carried out during 20 sessions for 50 minutes per session twice a week from March 2, 2009 to May 7, 2009.
The measurement tool was SEI. And additionally, the pictures which were drawn by them after reading Ruby and the rubbish bin by Magot Sunderland & Nicky Amstrong were analyzed comparatively in the times of pretest, post test, and further test. In order to confirm the effect of this group art therapy program, SPSS(ver.12.0 for Windows) was used, and by which Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was carried out. The observations on the change in their behavior and attitude, and the content of their story were recorded and analyzed for the qualitative analysis. The changing process of their pictures was analyzed focused on the contents of the pictures in the times of pretest, post test, and further test.
The results are as follows.
Firstly, the scores of pretest, post test, and further test by SEI were analyzed to find out whether this group art therapy program was effective on the improvement of the self-esteem of the low-income children. As the result, the sense of whole self-esteem(Z=-1.841, p<.10) and its sub-categories such as general self(Z=-1.826, p<.10), social self(Z=-1.841, p<1.0), domestic self(Z=-1.841, p<.10), academic self(Z=-1.841, p<.10) showed a significant difference between the pretest score and the post test score. The post test score was increased reaching significant level as compared with pretest score. And it was found out that the effect of this program was still maintained because the significant difference did not show between the score of post test and the score of the further test. It meant that this group art therapy program was effective on the improvement of low-income children's self-esteem.
Secondly, in view of the pictures drawn after reading the story book related with self-esteem, they expressed their feeling and thoughts with low self-esteem and self-deprecatingly under the judgement that the main character was treated like a dirt as he was ugly and ill-tempered before this program was carried out. However, after this program was carried out, they showed a self-defense feature. They revenged for their friends's taunts in order to make their way out of bad feelings resulted from their friends' taunts, and they held strongly to their own opinion, so that their friend might be able to taunt them. And in further times, they devised a method for finding new friends and for notifying that they themselves were most important. And they expressed their opinion that they could ask for a favor of a warm-hearted person. It meant that their self-esteem was heightened.
Thirdly, the changes in their behaviors by sessions were analyzed focused on the sub-categories such as general self and social self. As the result, in earlier sessions, they were not concentrated on their activity. More often, they quarreled due to the intervention in the other's activity. And they expressed their mind to rely on this therapist, and they wanted this therapist to concern about themselves only, not about all children. However, in the middle of therapeutic sessions, they concentrated on their activity, and gave their hand to their friends. They tried to be responsible for their thinking and plan, and then tried their best to the end. It meant that their self-esteem was heightened.
Fourthly, the changes in their picture story were examined out. In earlier sessions, they showed an offensive and self-deprecating features. And they preferred to remain in their fantasy, without seeking for a realistic or alternative plan to solve their problems. However, as this therapeutic sessions went on, they began to find out a way to solve their conflicts, and to handle their problems by themselves. That is to say, they made good objects or person enter in their story, so that they together might overcome their own difficulties. Finally, they found out their positive ability or power with confidence, and then they concluded their story with a happy ending. It meant that their self-esteem was heightened.
In conclusion, this group art therapy program was effective on the improvement of self-esteem of the low-income children. This study has a significant meaning in that it examines out the therapeutic possibilities of the metaphoric technique, the making of picture story, for the improvement of self-esteem of the low-income children who have psychological difficulties, live in poor surroundings.
However, due to the shortage of subjects, it is not easy to generalize the results of this study. And as the preceding studies on group art therapy with picture story making activity are not enough, it is necessary to carry out further studies with more subjects focused on the establishment of the theory on the picture story making and also focused on the composition of this program which are necessary for the generalization of the results of this study.
