This paper is to introduce the existing research achievements in cultural interchange in history between Korea and Japan that mentioned in my humble work A History of Philology in Traditional Korea(Taehaksa, 2012; revised edition 2013) and to suggest the methodology and the direction of research in future. Litetati in traditonal Korea used not only classical literary chinese(古文) but also Korean-style variant Hanmun(變格漢文) in literary activities. The style of writing mainly used in answer sheets of traditonal national examination(科擧) and in official documents was, however, classical style of literary chinese. The texts in Korean-style variant Hanmun including Idu(吏 讀) were rarely published and enjoyed but few exceptions. It is quite different that in Japan so-called Jun-Kanbun(準漢文, a mixed style of classical Chinese with Japanese) developed and lots of texts in Jun-Kanbun were published and distributed. In early period of Hanmun study, both countries accepted dictionaries such as ``zishu``(字書, character book), ``yunshu``(韻書, rhyme book), ``leishu``(類書, reference works arranged by categories) from China and attempted to harmonize them with their own local languages. It is assumed that Qieyun(切 韻, cutting rhymes) or its expansion rhyme dictionaries were introduced into Korea around 7th century, and literati in Japan started to rhyme out a poem in the 8th century. Unified Silla(統一新羅) established Guk-hak(國學, 682) and Dokseo-sampum-gwa (讀書三品科, 788) so to cultivate literati. In Japan texts of Confucianism, literature and miscellany were instructed during Nara(奈良) period(710~784) based on Gakuryo(學令). Althogh quite a few literati were familiar with using rhyme in traditional Korea, and the number of them was supposed to be more than that of in Japan, only a few of them could compose poem or prose with rhyme at will. For examlple, Li Han(李瀚)``s Monggu(蒙求) had a great influence in East Asia as a educational book, and not a few companion volumes and annotated editions were published. Ryu Huichun(柳希春, 1513-1577) attempet to follow the rhyme work of Monggu in his Sok-Monggu-bunju(續蒙求分註, a companion volume to Mongu with notes), but could not wholly adopt its phonological circulating structure. Sok-Monggu was reissued in 1659 in Japan and later published by Japanese government during Kyoho(享保) period. Many companion volumes of Monggu followed in Japan, and Honcho-Mogyu(本朝蒙求, 1686) by Suga Toru(菅亨) is the earliest. In the 17th centrury, some literarti in Japan atempted such phonological circulating structure to satisfy their intellectual curiosity, but it was not a common case. It is believed that the intellectual class familiar with using rhyme did not form with a large number in Japan as in Korea. Mealwhile yunshu in Joseon period can be classified into two types: ① the type which arranges four tones in a page as is exmplified in Gyujang-Jeonun (奎章全韻)-this type was poposed by government in early and late Joseon ② the type which arranges three tones in a page and rusheng(入聲) as a supplement as is exmplified in Samun-Tonggo(三韻通考)-this type prevailed through Joseon period. The latter form is similar to samjyung-un(三重韻) of Syubun-inryaku(聚分韻略) of Japan. It is probable that both were influenced by Zhongyuan-Yinyun(中原音韻) through different routes. The traditional national examination(科擧) promoted Hanmun study in some respect while producing normative knowledge. But it also hindered the growth of pure philosophy and literature, and had an not a few influence on publlication culture by restricting publication as well to sustain ideological uniformity. In Japan, however, publication culture flourished in 19th century and various texts were provided to literari. It is true that this prosperity is related to publlication culture of Joseon that was introduced into Japan by Joseon Tongsinsa(朝鮮通信使, Joseon missions to Japan), but although literati in both countries enjoyed same knowledge, the idea or philosophical thought formed by the same texts was different as the roles of the literati were different. There exist some old books owned by Japanese national or private library that are noted as Chinese edition, but have possibility of being published in Joseon or of having been property of some Joseon liteati. It is necessary to examine closely bibliographic information of texts in both coutries.
