Space has important meanings in the life of human beings. It refers to a place where human beings perform specific behaviors, and it has dynamics through which it evokes particular feelings in humans and generates some meanings for them. As suggested in the above descriptions of space, discussions on space have changed from the viewpoint of regarding it as a physical location to the perspective that there is an interrelationship between humans and space in such a way that they influence each other bidirectionally. In other words, space may influence human perception and behaviors, and at the same time, its interpretations may vary depending on the human perception of space. In this respect, space in early childhood education institutions has important meanings in the life of young children. In particular, spaces in educational institutions may influence the experience and relationships of young children depending on the way the spaces are organized and utilized.
So far, space in early childhood education institutions has been viewed as an area that should be managed by teachers. However, in the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum, both teachers and young children are regarded as subjects that engage in the arrangement and modification of space in education institutions, and the perspective toward space has changed into an open viewpoint which presumes that space may induce teachers and young children to perform new behaviors and generate meanings. When teachers attempt to reflect this changed viewpoint on space in their educational practice, it is important for them to have a proper perception on space and perform their roles appropriately. Thus, teachers need to carefully re-examine their perception of space for themselves.
Therefore, this study aimed to investigate early childhood teachers' perception and practice regarding the space in educational institutions in relation to the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum. In other words, this study attempted to gain a better understanding of the way in which early childhood teachers' perception and perspective on the entire space in an early childhood education institution, including classrooms, the outdoor playground, and corridors, are currently being applied and utilized. The findings of this study may be utilized as a basic data not only for the provision of support for space-related practice of teachers but also for planning in-service teacher training and teacher education programs intended to help teachers to recognize the value of the relationship between humans and space and enhance their sensitivity toward space.
The participants of this study were 6 early childhood teachers who were currently working as public kindergarten teachers, and their length of work experience in teaching varied from 3 to 27 years. Data was collected through individual interviews over a period of about 5 months from May to September 2022. Each participant was interviewed three times. Various reference data related to the participants' utilization of space were collected, and the data included the participants' records about children's play, photographs of classroom activities, and video data. Then, data analysis was conducted by using an iterative cyclic process involving transcription, coding, and categorization, and final themes were derived through this analysis process. To secure the reliability and validity of this study, the content of research was reviewed by the participants, following the researcher's self-reflection. Additionally, this study repeatedly went through expert review and consultation with the help of experts in the fields of early childhood education and qualitative research.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, it was found that although the participants previously thought that teachers had full authority in the management and operation of the spaces in early childhood education institutions, they have been trying to organize and utilize the spaces with young children since the implementation of the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum. In addition, the participants expressed the view that the utilization of a space requires some extra space where they can reconstruct various meanings of a given space derived from relationships and communication arising in the space. In this regard, they also thought that teachers should pay attention to diverse relationships and communication taking place in a space rather than focusing only on the physical characteristics of a particular space. Furthermore, the participants perceived that space has an interrelationship with human beings in such a way that space and humans influence each other. However, they thought that the perception of human beings has a greater influence on the construction of the meanings of space. Lastly, safety concerns and the perceptions of various members of the education community, such as the parents of children, fellow teachers, and the head of the educational institution, were found to cause some difficulty with respect to the participants' perception and utilization of space.
The educational implications of the study findings described above can be described as follows. First, changes in the participants' perception and utilization of space are considered to have occurred against the background of changes in the curriculum due to the implementation of the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum. This fact indicates the importance of contextual changes to elicit desirable changes in teachers' perception, and it suggests that there is a need to help teachers to understand and internalize the meanings of changes in the curriculum. To this end, teachers are required to try to understand and deliberate on the changed meanings of space in the process of implementing the curriculum as well as teacher education and reeducation programs related to space. Thus, it is necessary to lead teachers to carefully consider space in terms of the direction pursued by the Revised Nuri Curriculum in relation to various in-service teacher training programs and the discovery of practice cases related to the Nuri Curriculum.
Second, the participants were found to adhere to human-centered ways of thinking despite desirable changes in the perception of space, so it is necessary to shift our perspective to a new materialist approach that allows us to view space as a subject that is capable of interacting with human beings. Teachers' recognition of the influence of space may help them to understand and interpret their and young children's behaviors from a new perspective. Teachers need not adhere to or be constrained by a human-centered approach limited to simply expanding and integrating spaces or presenting methods for utilizing particular spaces other than classrooms. Instead, they should pay attention to children's play modified and recreated by space. It is thought that if teachers actively endeavor to recognize the influence of space on human behaviors, they will discover the potential of various spaces in early childhood education institutions and become able to look at human behaviors from a new perspective.
Third, the way teachers or children took the initiative in the utilization of space was different depending on the extent to which teachers allowed young children to participate and make decisions based on their belief in the ability of young children. The participant teachers' viewpoint on young children is in a virtuous cycle relationship with sharing control over space with young children. In other words, developing belief in the ability of young children and sharing control over space with children are not matters with a temporal precedence relation, but they reciprocally influence each other. In this respect, it is necessary to further expand space-related practice by strengthening the perception of young children as capable individuals through the observation of children's play. On the other hand, it is also required to enhance efforts to establish the image of young children as capable and competent persons while boldly attempting to share a leading role regarding the utilization of space. To promote these changes, it is necessary to spread and share various cases of educational practice that involve both play and space. In addition, teachers should also have an opportunity to reflectively consider their power and authority in the field of education and re-examine their roles related to space to create desirable changes.
Fourth, the participants reported that some difficulty in reflecting their changed perception of space in educational practice is related to the perceptions of people concerned with education, including themselves. In other words, it was found that difficulties experienced by teachers regarding the utilization of space are not limited to the physical problems of space, but they stem from different perspectives of people involved in early childhood education. Therefore, to ensure adequate utilization and support for open space pursued by the Revised Nuri Curriculum, concerted efforts should be made by the educational community. In addition, the members of the educational community should have a shared perception on space through smooth communication, and they should jointly endeavor to deliberate on and establish safety standards.
In summary, this study attempted to explore early childhood teachers' perception of space in educational institutions as well as their practice related to the utilization of the space, and discussed several educational implications of the study findings. In consideration of changed perceptions on space and a very limited amount of research available on space from the perspective of the Revised Nuri Curriculum, future research should include various quantitative and qualitative studies to investigate the perceptions of diverse members sharing spaces in educational institutions as well as various aspects of spaces created together by the members and to explore how young children assign meanings to spaces and modify them on their own initiative.
