즉, poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)-click GS를 PCL과 graphene oxide (GO)의 기능화에 의하여 합성하였다.
This study aims to prepare novel stimuli-responsive polymer nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene. These nanocarbon materials were functionalized using both covalent and noncovalent approaches to enhance the characteristics and performance of stimuli-responsive polymer nanocomposites. Particularly, nanocarbon functionalization focuses on Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition click chemistry, and diazotization and noncovalent functionalization methods. The potential applications of nanocarbon incorporated polymer nanocomposites are demonstrated in the field of shape memory effect, dielectric elastomer actuation, and conducting polymer actuation.
Shape memory polyurethane (SMP) and functionalized graphene nanoplatelet (f-GNP) nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ polymerization. The nanocomposites showed excellent dispersion of f-GNP in the polyurethane matrix and good thermo-responsive shape memory properties, which is due to the efficient covalent bonding between SMP molecules and f-GNP. Remarkable shape recovery to the extent of 96% was found in in-situ polymerized nanocomposites. An enhancement of thermal stability with an increase of 30 oC was found in SMP-f-GNP nanocomposites with 2 wt% f-GNP compared to the pure SMP. Further, the click chemistry reaction was utilized to fabricate the SMP/graphene sheet (GS) nanocomposites. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-click coupled GS reinforcing fillers were synthesized by covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) with PCL. Subsequently, the PCL-clicked GS was incorporated into SMP matrix by solution casting as reinforcing filler. The PCL-click coupled GS showed excellent interaction with the SMP matrix, and as a consequence, mechanical properties, thermal stability, and thermo-responsive shape memory properties of the resulting nanocomposite films were improved, remarkably. In particular, for SMP incorporated with 2% PCL clicked GS, the tensile strength, Young’s modulus and thermal stability were enhanced by 109%, 158% and 71 oC, respectively. This protocol can offer possibility to fully combine the extraordinary performances of GS with the shape memory effect of SMP, and thus may be useful in a variety of thermo-responsive and electroactive smart materials fields.
An enhanced electroactive shape memory effect was obtained by incorporation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to the synthesized calix[4]arene segmented polyurethane. The nanocomposites showed excellent SWCNT dispersion in the SMP matrix, thereby electroactive shape memory properties improved in a considerable extent. The hyperbranched polyurethane (HBPU) nanocomposites with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were also fabricated through solution casting method using poly(ε-caprolactone)diol as the soft segment, 4,4-methylene bis(phenylisocyanate) as the hard segment, and triethanolamine group for the hyperbranched polymer structure. MWCNTs were found to be dispersed well in the HBPU matrix. Consequently, excellent electroactive shape memory properties as well as enhanced mechanical properties were observed compared to the pure HBPU.
Two different approaches for CNT functionalization, that is, click chemistry and noncovalent functionalization, are dedicated to enhance the characteristics and performance of poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) tri-block copolymer (SEBS)/CNT nanocomposites for dielectric elastomer actuator application. The SEBS-functionalized MWCNT nanocomposites were first prepared using click chemistry. The nanocomposites showed excellent MWCNT dispersion in the SEBS matrix with unprecedented dielectric constant due to the effective covalent bonding between MWCNT and SEBS. The dielectric elastomer actuator composed of SEBS and MWCNTs showed the enhanced displacement along with applied voltage and CNT content. Secondly, the novel noncovalent CNT functionalization concept was applied to prepare the high dielectric elastomer nanocomposites with very low dielectric loss. The SEBS/SWCNT nanocomposites were fabricated, and the excellent dispersion of SWCNTs was obtained, which is enough to improve the mechanical and dielectric properties of nanocomposites. The SEBS/SWCNT dielectric elastomer actuators showed enhanced displacement in the dielectric elastomer actuation test, which is due to the synergistic effect of SWCNT and functional group. The conducting polymer actuator materials were finally fabricated using click coupled Fe3O4/polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposites. The synthesis of Fe3O4/PANI nanocomposites was carried out by covalently functionalizing the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with PANI. The possibility of Fe3O4/PANI nanocomposites as conducting polymer actuator material was tested and demonstrated by incorporating the Fe3O4/PANI nanocomposites into poly(vinyl alcohol) as a matrix polymer.
The above findings show the possibility for the fabrication of high performance stimulus-responsive smart polymer materials, based on CNT and graphene, which can be well suit to apply in the fields of shape memory polymer, dielectric elastomer, and conducting polymer actuators. The click coupling, covalent and noncovalent nanocarbon functionalization are found to be very effective methods to control the mechanical, electrical, and stimulus-responsive properties of these polymer nanocomposites. The nanostructure-controlled polymer nanocomposites are expected to offer a wide range of application in the material fields of actuators, transducer, and artificial muscle.
