성별 혐오 표현 노출 경험이 성평등 정책 태도에 미치는 영향 = How Exposure to Gendered Hate Speech Shapes Attitudes Toward Gender Equality Policies

This study emerges from concerns about how contemporary discussions on gender equality policies are increasingly framed within narratives of gender conflict. We examine how personal experiences of gender discrimination significantly influence attitudes toward such policies, focusing on individual discriminatory experience as a core factor. Specifically, we investigate how everyday exposure to gender-based hate speech affects attitudes toward gender equality policies, and how these effects vary by the individual’s gender, level of gender equality awareness, and communication environment. Using survey data from the second year of the ‘Social Fragmentation and Regional Disparities’ survey (N = 2,248), analyzed with inverse probability weighting based on propensity scores, the results are as follows. Experiences of misogynistic hate speech increased support for current gender equality policies, regardless of gender, while experiences of misandristic hate speech led to negative policy attitudes. Furthermore, among women with higher gender equality awareness, experiences of misogynistic hate speech (both online and offline) and experiences of offline misandristic hate speech strengthened positive policy attitudes. Conversely, for men, higher gender equality awareness weakened the effect of misogynistic hate speech experience on policy attitudes, and the moderating effect of gender equality awareness on misandristic hate speech experience showed a non-linear trend. Based on these findings, we emphasize the importance of understanding the social context of hate speech and focusing on various everyday gender-discriminatory expressions and the individual's inferential thinking process in interpreting them and evaluating alternatives. We also highlight the need to foster a multi-layered discussion on the concept of gender equality, grounded in the diverse experiences of society members, and to achieve a policy consensus based on this foundation.
