This paper aims to empirically confirm the Tragedy of Commonsense Morality, which refers to the paradox where morality that promotes in-group cooperation also results in intergroup conflict. The present study identified the causal effects of moral culture on the dehumanization toward social minorities. In order to comprehend the Tragedy of Commonsense Morality, it is imperative to differentiate between moral culture that fortifies group cohesion and moral culture that safeguards individuals from the collective. This research employed the Moral Foundations Questionnaire to measure two distinct moral cultures and the Ascent Measure of Blatant Dehumanization was used to assess the dehumanization that extremely exacerbates intergroup conflict. Subsequently, analyses were conducted to determine whether the dehumanization of two types of social minorities, migrants and sexual minorities, who are often targets of violence differs according to moral culture. Because moral culture and dehumanization are psychological factors, it is important to note that there are likely unobserved confounding variables affecting them. This study used gain score analysis to eliminate noncausal effects caused by unobserved confounding variables and identify causal effects. Additionally, causal graphs were presented to explain the principle of bias offsetting in the gain score analysis. The analysis results show that those who consider the Binding Moral Culture more important dehumanize social minorities more. On the other hand, the Individualizing Moral Culture reduces dehumanization toward social minorities. This suggests that moral culture that protects individual rights is necessary for intergroup cooperation. This study is significant in that it identifies causal relationships between moral culture and group conflict, which has previously been discussed at the theoretical level.
