Schiller proposes the method of building the ideal State in his On the Aesthetic Education of Man. He does it indirectly in the process of clarifying the meaning of Freedom and the method of acquiring Freedom. Freedom annuls all constraint and sets man free both physically and morally. More technically, Freedom is defined as the combination of sense drive and form drive , or feeling and reason, where both are developed to the fullest extent without interfering with each other s domain.
Beauty is an exemplar where such Freedom is manifested, and it is only through Beauty that man makes his way to Freedom. The Art has in it Beauty as the core concept. The Art can be divided into mechanical art, fine art and politico-pedagogical art. The politico-pedagogical art, which is both the cause and result of the ideal State, is the most perfect kind of the three. In Schiller, the ideal State is only an aspect of the ideal man, and consequently the ideal State refers to the State in which every individual man has realized himself to the fullest extent. In this sense, Schiller s view of the ideal State represents the theory of education.
In spite of apparent differences in many respects, an unmistakable similarity is noted between the Schiller s Freedom and Laotzu s Spontaneity (Ziran) . Like Schiller s concept of Freedom, Laotzu s concept of Spontaneity points to the ultimate goal of education. For that reason, the two concepts interpreted in mutual relationship will contribute to a more complete understanding of education.
