This paper focuses on the autobiography of Kim Sijong, a representative Korean diaspora poet in Japan, the conversation between Kim Si-jong and a novelist Kim Seok-beom, and Kim Seok-beom’s epic novel <Volcano Island>. The purpose of this study is to compare and examine Kim Si-jong’s ‘Post Office Incident’ and his subsequent escape and stowaway process as revealed in the three texts.
Kim Si-jong, who participated in the uprising as a member of organization for the Jeju 4․3, was implicated in the ‘Post Office Incident,’ and after a-year-long escape, he smuggled himself to Japan and settled in Ikaino, a Korean community in Osaka. For ideological reasons, Kim was unable to publicly disclose his participation in the Jeju 4․3 as a member of the Namro Party for many years.
Only in 2000 did he reveal his experiences with the Jeju 4․3 in public. This account is recounted in detail in “the Conversation” with Kim Seok-beom(2001). In his autobiography, published in 2015, Kim Si-jong further details his participation in the Jeju 4․3, including the ‘Post Office Incident,’ and his subsequent escape and stowaway. The difference between the narratives in these two texts allows us to recognize the sense of the times in revealing historical facts that were once taboos.
On the other hand, Kim Sijong’s ‘Post Office Incident’ and subsequent actions appear several times in Kim Seok-beom’s novel <Volcano Island>. Kim Seok-beom uses his own political stance to transform the real-life experiences of Kim Sijong into a literary version of the poet’s life in <Volcano Island>.
The purpose of this paper is to closely compare Kim Si-jong’s account of the ‘Post Office Incident’ and subsequent escape as revealed in three texts: the autobiography, the conversation, and the novel <Volcano Island>. The process is linked to an examination of the context and the meaning of the differences in the three texts covering Kim’s story during the Jeju 4․3 incident.
