During the past several decades, Korean traditional customs and rituals have been changing over and over. Generally, westernization of life style has been mentioned as a main reason for cultural changes in Korea. However, our latest analysis shows that the main reason is that Korea`s economic and social environment has changed a great deal and thus cultural changes especially come from the reorganization of economic structure by industrialization. In addition, the reason also includes several other factors such as urbanization, collapse of traditional village and relative-centered society, and extension of nuclear family. In short, the dominant factors of cultural changes are caused by industrialization and urbanization rather than westernization itself. On the other hand, the changes of traditional culture has been affected also by the continuous intervention of national authorities such as `Saemaul` Campaign, the Simplified Family Ritual Standards, the ordained festive days, the political ideology of regional festivals, and the preservation policy for cutural heritage. Westernization, of course, can be seen in the calendar customs such as Christmas, but it is limited to only a small part of the changes. It is certain that westernization has contributed a portion to cultural change in Korea The changes of the traditional culture has several phases: at first, traditional culture has changed by modernization and westernization: in the next place, westernization comes to a limitation and traditional culture is re-evaluated: at last, traditional culture is actively re-created. These changes extend from urban area to rural communities; from upper class to lower class; from the young to the old: from the white-color class to the blue-color class: from the intellectual class to the unlearned class. The reception of Western culture has braught a wide spectrum of change. But the contact with Western culture does not always mean that all elements of Korean culture elements are influenced to the same degree. In the case of ancestor worship rites, the original element is not affected by the connection with Western culture and their fixed pattern is transmitted completely. On the other hand, Korean funeral ceremonies adopt the elements of Western culture and lose their traditional elements. In addition, there tends to be a cultural lag in the adoption of physical and psychological elements - the latter is likely to remain more traditional and thus more tardy in their adoption. Also, there are many cases where the values of Western culture are not adopted together with its form. For example, Koreans tend to put more food than they consume on their buffet plates, do not act in accordance with rules in public places, and tend to be more exclusive and so on. Usually the psychological aspect of culture has a tendency to remain unchanged. For example, handshaking, a Western way of greeting, and bowing the elders or anyone from a higher rank in an organization, coexist in Korean culture. And, because of the traditional boundary which exists between men and women, embracing one another when saying hello is still unacceptable in Korea culture. These days, there are lots of the words of worry and self-examination on Korean culture such as `culture of disorder`, `culture of exclusiveness`, `culture of extravagance` and so on. Moreover, the lack of humanity-oriented culture has been suggested as one of the severe problems that Korean culture has. However, It is also dangerous to worry about the negative effect of Western culture and to be adhere to the excellence of Korean traditional culture. When the above stated contradictions of Korean culture are considered seriously, Korean culture could reshape its distorted elements and pursuit its right way with the concept of universality.
