The Five Emperors were some of the most important rulers who emerged in the development of civilization and the formation of political organizations before the Xia dynasty period, and most ancient texts describe them in a biographical style where one passed down the throne to the next one. Furthermore, while the names of the Five Emperors slightly differ depending on the ancient text, they are all related by blood and serve as the basis for the establishment and legitimacy of a group led by Yu the Great, which is regarded as the foundation of the chiefdom society that constituted mainland China. Hence, they are still often examined in studies on the origins of ancient society and the early members of the ruling class.
The Five Emperors documented in ancient texts are divided into several categories, and interestingly, most of their succession to the throne can be explained by the theory of Five Elements and Mutual Generation. The Five Elements were fully systematized by Zou Yan at the end of the Warring States Period. If the replacement of dynasties can be explained by the Five Elements, it is possible to infer that the genealogy of the Five Emperors was compiled and created during the Warring States Period, or that the genealogy of dynasties was interpreted based on the mechanical and continuous sequence of Mutual Generation and Mutual Overcoming between the Five Elements. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether the relationships and succession frameworks of individuals selected as the Five Emperors are acceptable as they are.
This study builds on previous findings to further delve into the problems and origins of the succession of the Five Emperors. To begin with, this study conducted a literature review to identify figures established as the Five Emperors by collecting and reviewing data related to the Five Emperors in surviving texts, and to overcome the limitations of written texts compiled and organized in later periods by comparing them with the oracle bone script of the Shang dynasty, the earliest text currently verified and available.
In other words, this study examined how the description of the Five Emperors changed over time, while verifying the original form of the Five Emperors and tracking what gave rise to the genealogical form of the Five Emperors, which is now commonly recognized.
