‘Humanity’ is the abbreviation of ‘personhood of human being’, which means the common uniqueness possessed by human beings alone. This is the opposite term of the ‘inhumane,’ a state of destroyed personhood or humanity that Primo Levi had experienced in a Nazi concentration camp. The most representative characteristic of this inhumanity is “thoughtlessness” from Hannah Arendt. Biologist Robert Sapolsky says the uniqueness of human beings is the ‘ability to think’ and ‘ability to solve contradiction.’ To resolve contradiction is part of the mixed emotions that only human beings have. I expand upon this thinking ability and complex feelings into four characteristics: intellectuality, emotionality, morality, and spirituality. Some researchers think that these characteristics are shared with animals, including primates. However, only humans have these unique characteristics. Human intelligence comes from the brain cortex size, which is incomparable to any other animal. Specifically, humans are aware of their own consciousness, and a sense of time in which they simultaneously experience past and future as well as present. Human uniqueness is also displayed in complex and mixed emotions. There is a strong disagreement whether emotions found in animals are the same as human emotions or whether they can even be called emotions. The insistence that human emotions and spirituality are also found in animals may come from a bias based on the assumptions of evolutionists. It is difficult to find evidence that human spirituality, the transcendence that brings consciousness of God and unifies and harmonizes the various elements of life, is also found in animals.
Human morality is manifested by various virtues. These virtues are largely classified as intellectual virtues, moral virtues, civic virtues, and performance virtues. All of these human characteristics come from the image of God. Humanity as created in the image of God is what characterizes their fundamental difference from other creatures. However, this image of God has fallen because of human sin and has led to the‘inhuman way.’ Therefore, human beings should restore the original humanity that reflects the image of God. The original humanity reveals the existence of God.
