본 연구의 모든 통계 처리는 SPSS 26.0 Windows용 프로그램을 사용하여 독립 표본 t-검정(independent t-test)과 반복 측정 이원분산분석(two-way ANOVA with repeated measure)을 실시하였다.
In the DSM-5(American Psychiatry Association, 2013), dyslexia is defined as a symptom that shows difficulty in reading accurately and quickly, reading and understanding, or difficulty in spelling letters. Developmental dyslexic children in the lower grades of elementary school show delays in decoding and reading fluency, and the higher the grade after that, the more negative the reading comprehension is (Yang & Kim, 2019). Reading ability is a basic basis for school learning and furthermore, it is an important learning tool that determines academic achievement (Kim & Ko, 2012). However, children with developmental dyslexia develop into secondary problems such as learning difficulties throughout school age, and falling into learned lethargy that becomes lethargic, thinking that it is difficult to change results with any effort as negative situations continue. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of each subject of children at risk of developmental dyslexia and to support learning in an appropriate way in each subject.
Korean language and mathematics are the main subjects of the lower grades of elementary school, and if you look at previous studies, children with difficulty reading often have difficulties in math, and low math achievement is related to poor reading (Byun, 1998; Jeong & Kim, 2010). Reading and mathematics are similar in that the process of acquiring functions from basic process strategies to the automatic playback stage is similar, and are promoted by the frequency presented to children(Byun, 1998). In fact, it is reported that 50% to 60% of cases overlap with dyslexia(Yoo et al., 2018; Seo, 2018).
The basic ability to have in mathematical learning is a sense of mathematics (Kim, 2006). Mathematical sense refers to the sense of what numbers mean, the ability to perform mathematical calculations in the head, compare them in real life (Gersten & Chard, 1999), and the ability to use and interpret numbers in numbers-related situations (Ha, 2015; Jeong, 2010). The sense of number develops from infancy to early school age, and this period is called a critical period in the development of the sense of number(Jeong & Kim, 2016). The element that can predict mathematical ability early is the sense of number (Locuniak & Jordan, 2008; Jordan, Kaplan, Locuniak. & Ramineni, 2007), and mathematics is a highly hierarchical subject, so difficulties accumulate as the grade goes up, so it should be diagnosed early and helped. Children with insufficient number sense lack a sense of number size or computational effect (Seo, 2018) and are significantly delayed in informal math skills(Jeong & Kim, 2016). In addition, compared to ordinary children, it shows lower performance not only in accuracy but also in terms of task performance speed.
In order to successfully solve the mathematical word problem, it is necessary to understand and interpret the various meanings contained in the sentence, change it into a mathematical form using formulas or symbols, and calculate the formula accurately (Kim & Joo, 1997; Lee & Hong, 2007). The language and reading skills required to identify problems are important factors affecting the mathematical word problem (Ha, 2015; Jeong & Kim, 2010), and in the case of lower elementary school mathematical word problem, simple addition and subtraction are required, so computational ability affects the problem solving. Since the mathematical word problem has a high relationship between reading and language ability as well as mathematical factors, developmental dyslexic children who have difficulty reading are likely to have difficulty in mathematical word problem.
Most of the studies targeting children with developmental dyslexia focus on reading and writing. Since both reading and math skills are required from the first grade of elementary school, understanding the number sense of at risk children with developmental dyslexia in the first grade of elementary school and their ability to solve mathematical word problem will predict the difficulties that developmental dyslexia children may have in learning math and help them learn math. Therefore, in this study, the following research questions were determined to examine the difference in mathematical word problem solving ability consisting of simple operations and the number sense characteristics of children and ordinary children at risk of developmental dyslexia. 1) Is there a difference in the number sense scores between groups? 2) Is there a difference in scores according to the task mode (Reading, Listening) of the mathematical word problem consisting of simple operations between groups? 3) Is there a difference in the score converted to 100 points depending on the type of assignment (Number sense, Math word problem) between groups?
The subjects of this study are children who live in Gangwon and have a normal intelligence category with a K-CTONI-2 (Park, 2014) intelligence index of 80 or higher, and have no difficulty in linguistic understanding with a KOLRA (Pae et al., 2015) listening comprehension standard score of 85 or higher. The analysis targets are 18 children at risk of developmental dyslexia with a standard score of less than 85 in the KOLRA reading index 2, and 18 children with a standard score of 85 or higher in the reading index 2, a total of 36. This test was conducted with a number sense task consisting of seven sub-areas (Counting, Number recognition, Quantity discrimination, Number meaning, Missing numbers, Estimation, Calculation), and a mathematical word problem consisting of reading and listening tasks. In order to exclude the order effect, half of the subjects performed the number sense task first, and the other half performed the mathematical word problem first. In addition, in order to exclude the repetitive effect, the tasks of the mathematical word problem were divided into A and B, and the reading tasks and listening tasks were different.
The sub-area measurements of the number sense task are the counting area is the number of errors and time(seconds) required, the number recognition area is the score(number of correctly read questions) and time(seconds) required, the quantity discrimination area is the score(number of questions answered correctly), the number meaning area is the score(number of correctly represented questions), the missing number area is the score(number of questions answered correctly), the estimation area is score(number of questions with less than 1cm distance between a given number and the number displayed by the child) and estimation distance total score(sum of the distances of all questions), the calculation area is score(number of questions answered correctly) and time(seconds) required. The total score of number sense (number recognition score + quantity discrimination score + number meaning score + missing number score + estimation score + calculation score) and total number sense time (counting time + number recognition time + calculation time) were measured. In addition, in the case of mathematical word problems, the addition score, subtraction score, and total task score were measured by using the reading task score and the listening task score as the number of correctly answered questions. The total number sense score (64 points) and the total number word problem score (20 points) were converted into 100 points and compared.
All statistical processing in this study used a program for SPSS 26.0 Windows. Independent t-test and two-way ANOVA with repeated measurement were performed, and if the interaction effect was shown, a post-test was performed with paired t-test.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, as a result of examining the characteristics of the number sense between groups, there was a significant difference in both the total number sense score and the total number sense time required. By sub-area, children at risk of developmental dyslexia showed statistically lower performance than ordinary children in terms of backward-counting time, jump-counting time, number recognition time, estimation difference total score, calculation time. Previous studies have shown that children at risk of developmental dyslexia show low performance in accuracy and more time in task performance speed (Jeong & Kim, 2016; Kim, 2006; Kim & Kang, 2016) and that they are significantly delayed in counting and estimation (Jeong & Kim, 2016). In addition, the observed significant difference in most numerical task time is related to the findings of Martos & Francisco (1995), Breznitz, Zvia & Meyler (2003), and Wang & Li-Chih (2018), which show that dyslexia is slower to process information than non-dyslexic people. These results suggest that more time should be provided to developmental dyslexic children even with the same task.
Second, as a result of examining the scores according to the task mode (Reading, Listening) of the mathematical word problem consisting of simple operations between groups, children at risk of developmental dyslexia were statistically significantly lower in addition score, subtraction score, and total score. The main effect between groups was statistically significant, but the main effect between task modes and the interaction effect between groups and task modes were not shown. Most of the children at risk of developmental dyslexia showed difficulty in reading assignments, and the subjects of this study were selected as children with no difficulty in verbal understanding, but they also showed lower performance than general children in listening assignments. Looking at these results, it is considered that children at risk of developmental dyslexia have overall difficulty in mathematical word problem. In particular, as the length of sentences or the number of sentences increased, greater difficulties were observed, which should help children with developmental dyslexia to feel a sense of accomplishment in math problems by adjusting the length or number of sentences.
Third, as a result of examining the 100 points conversion score according to the group and task type (Number sense, Mathematical word problem), both the total number sense score and the mathematical word problem solving ability of the group were statistically significantly lower in children with developmental dyslexia than in ordinary children, and the interaction effect between the group and task types was observed. Children at risk of developmental dyslexia showed greater difficulty in the mathematical word problem than the math sense task, which is a task presented in numbers. This difference was similar to the study of Jeong and Kim (2010) that children with math learning disabilities with reading disabilities have difficulty solving math problems even in sentences that do not require high reading skills. In addition, in the study of Ha (2015), it is said that mathematical word problems are related not only to reading and language skills, but also to the sense of numbers, such as counting and calculation. Both the difficulty of reading children in the at risk developmental dyslexia group and the low performance in number sense tasks compared to ordinary children seem to have affected the mathematical word problem. Children with developmental dyslexia are more likely to have difficulty in math classes even though they have no problems with intelligence and linguistic comprehension. It is necessary to increase the number of questions by math task area and to understand the difficulties that children with developmental dyslexia in mathematics by classifying them by type of mathematical word problem.
This study examines the number sense characteristics and mathematical word problem-solving ability of general children in the first grade of elementary school and at risk children with developmental dyslexia. The results of this study can be basic data for guiding mathematical learning of children with developmental dyslexia. In addition, estimation area and the backward counting and jump counting in the counting area can be the basis for selecting children with number sense risk among children with developmental dyslexia in the first grade of elementary school. There was no difference in accuracy in the easy difficulty task of children at risk of developmental dyslexia, but it was confirmed that all took more time. This suggests that even if the same task is presented to children with developmental dyslexia, more time should be provided and the amount of task should be adjusted.
Currently, even though there are many children who have difficulty in math in Korea, children with dyscalculia are not receiving proper education because there is no measurement tool to check their dyscalculia. The tasks measured in this study are areas where children at risk of number sense have difficulty, and it is necessary to develop a measurement tool that can confirm dyscalculia including these areas. From the lower grades of elementary school, which began the school age, it is necessary to check whether children have elements of dyscalculia, and to provide differentiated education by predicting difficulties that may appear in mathematics in the future.
