For the ancient Egyptians, executing the principle of ius ad bellum, the “righteous cause for war” or the “right to engage in warfare,” constituted a sacred obligation for the king. This duty involved upholding and preserving ma’at, the harmonious balance between gods and humanity, for the betterment of Egypt, a nation uniquely aligned with the divine order. This encompassed the containment and eradication of izfet, the perpetual force of chaos. As the exclusive embodiment of sacred kingship, every war, meticulously strategized and executed as part of a pharaoh’s responsibilities, was consequently deemed a “just war” or a “holy war.” Hence, defensive conflicts aimed at safeguarding Egypt from external threats, preemptive strikes and missions to eliminate hostile external forces, as well as internal conflicts sparked by uprisings against the dynasty, all found justification under the unified pretext of preserving ma’at. The validity of the righteous cause for war was so profound that all methods employed in warfare were regarded as ius in bello, the “righteous means of war.” In addition to the legitimate cause, the perception of superiority over external menaces epitomized by izfet could lead to a remorseless and ethically untroubled prosecution of warfare. As a consequence, practices like declaring war and adhering to sacred rules of engagement were infrequently observed, both within the kingdom and on the international stage, when confronting morally and physically inferior malevolent forces.
On the contrary, the act of capturing live prisoners of war, despite conflicting with the ancient Egyptian religious ideology centered around ma’at, was frequently practiced due to practical battlefield constraints and for economic and strategic reasons. These captives were commonly utilized as mercenaries or state laborers.
Moreover, while diplomatic negotiations were indeed utilized alongside warfare to preserve and enhance international relations among ancient nations, it can be stated that Egypt, relatively secluded compared to the territorial states of Mesopotamia, lacked a tradition of conflict resolution through diplomatic negotiations or peace treaties.
