The purpose of this paper is to examine the new characteristics of Lee Mungu’s early novels centering on ‘family.’ In the history of Lee Mungu research, discussion over ‘family’ has remained only fragmentary mentions, but "family" forms an important element in Lee’s early novels, which has largely been overlooked by the macroscopic view to interpret his early novels. Lee Mungu’s early novel. While the writer’s family history related to the Korean War is well known, the fact that, contrary to general expectations, Lee did not directly write about the Korean War in his works and his position/attitude ‘about’ the Korean War have not been closely examined. Against this background, this paper explored why Lee Mungu’s early novels repeatedly dealt with the issue of ‘family’ in relation to the artist’s war experience. Based on this analysis, the author analyzed that the patterns of family disorganization shown in Lee’s early novels signifies discontinuity and differences between generations.
In Chapter 1, the author looked into Lee’s essays, revealing that the family history that he did not directly write about in his novels was the family members’ death amid the Korean War, or more precisely, the writer’s personal impression on that event. In Chapter 2, the author showed that Lee Mungu seemed stood apart from ideology issues and did not directly mention the Korean War in his novels, but instead he repeatedly wrote about ‘disorganization of family’ in his early novels. The author also looked into the superficial aspect of family disorganization shown in his early novels depending on integration of different generations. Despite differences according to the age groups of the core characters, families in his early novels have one thing in common: they could not escape the single generation hence failed to produce a new generation. This implies recognition of generation discontinuity. In Chapter 3, the author noted the negative depiction of parent generations in these early novels. Incompetent, inhumane, or far from authoritative, the image of parents is a substantial factor that hinders child generations from build families and signifies the absence of authority systems for child generations to rely on.
