類書에 나타난 조선 지식인의 花卉에 대한 인식 = An intellectual of the Joseon Dynasty's awareness about flowering plants in Chinese Classical Encyclopedias

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Through analyzing Lee Su-kwang(李睟光)'s 『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』, Lee-Ik(李瀷)'s 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』 and Jo Jae-sam(趙在三)'s 『Songnamjapji(松南雜識)』 which were representative encyclopedias in the Joseon Dynasty, it considered an intellectual of the Joseon Dynasty's awareness about flowering plants. As a result, the findings were as follows.
1.Anawarenessofplantclassification:『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』 <Hwemokbu(卉木部)> is composed of 「Flower(花)」, 「Grass(草)」, 「Bamboo(竹)」 and 「Tree(木)」. The contents of flowering plants is included in 「Flower(花)」. In this sense, 『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』 only had an awareness of plant classification among three Chinese Classical Encyclopedias. 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』 just has 4 clauses about flowering plants in <Manmulmun(萬物門)>, so we can't find an awareness of plant classification. 『Songnamjapji(松南雜識)』 contains <Hwayakryu(花藥類)> and <Chomokryu(草木類)>, this shows that 『Songnamjapji(松南雜識)』classifies plants as flowering plants and grasses and trees. <Hwayakryu(花藥類)> includes all kinds of medicinal ingredients as well as flowering plants, but they are not mixed. So it seems that the classification consciousness about flowering plants is existed.
2. The number and kind of flowering plants:『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』 <Hwemokbu(卉木部)> 「Flower(花)」 includes contents about nine species - plum blossom, peony, rose, lotus flower, chrysanthemum, camellia flower, gardenia seeds, Rhododendron indicum and garden balsam - in 12 clauses. 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』<Manmulmun(萬物門)> includes contents about three species - plum blossom, peony and rugosa rose - in 4 clauses such as Mundosimmae(門倒心梅), Mokdanmuhyang(牧丹無香), Okmae(玉梅), Mokdan(牧丹) and Chuljangeoryu(黜墻御留). In 181 clauses of 『Songnamjapji(松南雜識)』 <Hwayakryu(花藥類)>, 56 clauses are classified as flowering plants and 50 species are introduced.
3. Composition method of knowledge about flowering plants:『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』 <Hwemokbu(卉木部)> 「Flower(花)」 is composed of a flowering plant's name, demonstration about properties, experience about a flowering plant, new and unusual stories associated with a flowering plant. The flowering plant clauses of 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』 is composed of several contents by expression of intellectual curiosity. The flowering plant clauses of 『Songnamjapji(松南雜識)』 <Hwayakryu(花藥類)> is composed of a flowering plant's name, sorts and properties, a flowering plant in literatures, uses and effects of a flowering plant.
4. Level of awareness of flowering plants:Lee Su-kwang(李睟光) basically described flowering plants based on literary view and consciousness. His fount of knowledge about flowering plants was literature(文獻) but he also included collected information by observation and Jeonmun(傳聞). Lee Su-kwang(李睟光) tried to include flowering plants which he had seen directly. And Lee-Ik(李瀷) was indifferent flowering plants which was irrelevant to public welfare. Therefore there are not many of flowering plants in 『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』 and 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』. On the other hand, when he compiled 『Songnamjapji(松南雜識)』, Jo Jae-sam(趙在三) based on literature and natural history consciousness than the natural scientific thought. For this reason, it is plentiful in contents about flowering plants. Also, unrealistic contents which are against natural scientific facts are considerably mixed. Jo Jae-sam(趙在三)'s fount of knowledge about flowering plants was literature(文獻), and there doesn't appear observation and experiment that we could find in 『Jibongyuseol(芝峯類說)』 and 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』.
