Descendant of a distinguished literary family, member of the avant-garde Bloomsbury group, herself an experienced critic and reviewer, Virginia Woolf was taken seriously as an artist. She was a feminist. The fact is worth mentioning in a study of her, not because of her specifically feminist polemic such as A Room of One's Own, but because it explains the sense in which she was a self-consciously feminine writer. She had reasons for being one. Her father, Lestlie Stephen had been a distinguished critic and a philosopher in the Victorian agnostic school of thought, but in his family he had typified the self-centered, of the Victorian family man. Indulgent towards alls sons, self-pitying and demanding towards his wife and daughter.
Virginia Woolf's feminism contributed something essential to her artistic development. It enriched her fiction with a social and psychological metaphor. And it provided a necessary link with the world of the social scientist and the reformer. She was certainly committed to an aesthetic that stressed the purity of the work of art She was also interested in social problems. She combined these characteristics in her own highly individual way.
She create a femine sentence, and also transforms classical genes in to distinctively feminine modalities. Both the elegy and the novel are reshaped in To the Lighthouse to emerge in a female voice.
Virginia Woolf's feminism grew out of a desire for wholeness and harmony. She began by emphasizing the Injustices done to women. On February 26,1941. She finished Between the Acts. Four weeks later, she went out for one of her usual walks across the sussex downs, placed a heavy stone in her pocket, and stepped into the River Ouse.
