Previous research on theaters has been divided into discussions on theaters in Seoul and local areas. Among them, theater research in Seoul is focused on first-run theater. This trend is due to the lack of basic data for theaters other than first-run theater. In particular, it was difficult to get basic information such as management programs and audience tendencies because the second-run theater in the 1950s paid little attention to discussions at that time. At that time, however, the audience in Seoul watched more movies in second-run theater than in first-run theater and accounted for a large proportion of the industry. This study summarizes the topography of the second-run theater, which was often used by Seoul citizens during this period, through newspaper articles, advertising, and memoirs.
The topography map of the theater in Seoul was similar to that of the Japanese colonial era until 1954. However, both first-run theater and second-run theater increased dramatically since 1955. In the case of first-run theater, it was established around Jongno-gu and Jung-gu, which were existing theater areas, but in the case of second-run theater, there was a greater increase in other areas. In addition, until the mid-1950s, threr were second-run theaters like Myeong-dong Theater, which specialized in foreign movie theaters, but most of them were theaters where performances and movies coexisted. Places like Gyerim Theater and Dongyang Theater had more performances. However, with the steady supply and demand of movies and the success of the box office, the proportion of movies in the second-run theaters gradually increased. By the end of the 1950s, most second-run theaters had programs centered on movies, and performances had almost disappeared.
Depending on the regional distribution of the second-run theater, the trend of movie screenings varies greatly. As Korean films gradually became successful, more theaters were converted into Korean cinema theaters. While Myeong-dong Theater and Gyeongnam Theater were mainly foreign movie theaters in the downtown area, theaters in the region gradually became Korean movie theaters. It can be assumed that if the audience in the downtown area preferred foreign films because they were composed of college students or office workers, the theaters located in Dongdaemun-gu and Yeongdeungpo-gu were mainly local residents and they preferred to watch Korean films.
Research on second-run theater in Seoul is in its infancy with general information. In fact, discussions on second-run theater, which were visited by more Seoul citizens than first-run theater, will enable a comprehensive study of Seoul's theater culture. And this discussion will be a major source of research on the changes in cities in Seoul at the time and the resulting socio-cultural changes.
