This study is a consideration on the theme and expression of two series art pieces of me in installation fine art, <Space Odyssey> and <Deep Simplicity> which have been created over more than Seven years. The series <Space Odessey> is a work including the story on the dream and craving of urbanites who lives in modern times, and the series <Deep Simplicity> is a work in which I agonized concerning the possibility on the creation, endless evolution and change of the universe.
Modern cities which is a space where most of modern people reside show a vital phenomenon which is similar to that of organisms in that modern cities are created in the way just as the colony of living things like grasses and trees, that they expand relying on foods and resources, that they cannot avoid suffering pain and being stagnant if they reach to saturation according to excessive high density in the number of people and buildings. Also it is anticipated that space cities and space structures which will be made when humankind extend their hands to space will also manifest organic vital phenomenon in a similar appearance of modern cities on the earth. I paid attention to the diverse appearances of modern cities which have this organic vital phenomenon and the imaginative figures which future space cities will have. And I attempted to fathom the dreams and cravings of modern people through the artistic presentation for these appearances of modern cities and figures of future space cities, which are the themes of my first series work <Space Odyssey>.
John Gribbin called the simplicity which exists on the basis of the infinite chaos of this world as Deep Simplicity. In case of the unpredictable natural calamity by mother nature which is unable to cope with by human ability, merely a minute simple situation exists on the basis of it. However it ends in that a magnificent event occurs inevitably as the waves which this simple situation generated, are replicated and spreaded into an entire network. In this context, the deep simplicity which John Gribbin referred exists only on the basis of a magnificent event, and it does not reveal it`s appearance on the surface. On the surface, only the appearance of chaosmos which is a kind of complicated order in which order and chaos are connected elaborately. The second series work of me <Deep Simplicity> is one by which I would like to say about this deep simplicity which exists on the basis of the universe. However my series work, <Deep Simplicity> does not implement the simplicity which John Gribbin said as it is, but explores the appearance in which utopia which is equivalent to order and heterotopia which is equivalent to chaos are elaborately connected on the surface and coexist as a complicated order. That is, the work reveals this world and the universe which have the appearance in which utopia which is a nonexistent ideal space and distopia which is existent but heterogeneous space exist in mixing. Particularly, in this work, I struggled to be faithful to the theoretical basis of my work as I concentrated to present the concept and theory of heterotopia which is 'a place without a place' and 'a reversed and mixed place' according to the reference of Michel Foucault. In this work, I also attempted to present the phenomenon that the universe forms space as it expands continually according to the rule of self-similarity and recursiveness by fractal structure. Also I cited the concept of non-places which was introduced by Marc Auge as place concept for the exhibition space in which these two series works were displayed for the audience apart from the works themselves. The non-places referred by Marc Auge mean not the places where people reside in reality, but the places for transfer where people drop in only for a moment to depart to other places, as well as not the places where people meet together, but the places where people only touch one another to pass by. These are also the characteristics of modern society and modern cities just as Marc Auge explained.
In the two series works, I rendered the appearance that the various concepts which are compatible mutually or which are difficult to be compatible one another create this complicated world as they reveal their identities and act out and show diverse sections of their boundaries on the theoretical basis of above explanation. Particularly in the two series works, I strived to make use of the infinite possibility of expression on the characteristic of 'boundary' with various media as I paid attention to the situation of boundaries which events and objects create. Modern people who live in the sea of networks rather produce chaos and disorder through the way of life in which individuals get entangled and blended in the world of infinite networks which is based on technology and seems to be established in order. In the two series works of mine, I made great effort to remind the appearance of modern people like this on one hand, and to suggest numbers of sectional situations in the future on the other hand through an objective and flexible way of thinking. Further, I attempted diverse media and installation methods to connect human life and art, and to suggest a new aesthetic viewpoint concerning the future circumstance of humans.
