廉相涉의 1920年代 長篇小說 硏究 : 그 作家意識을 中心으로 = A Study of Novels in 1920s by Yum Sangsup

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Yum Sangsup(1897∼1963) was one of the distinguished modern writers of Korea. He wrote for the most part realistic novels.
The key subject of this essay is a study of his novels in 1920. He begat to write in 1919, when he had stayed in Japan, but his full-scale writing began in 1921. The most successful work at this stage was a short novel 「A GREEN FROG IN A SPECIMENROOM」 (PIO BON SIL YE CHUNG GAE GU RI).
At the early stage, he positively took part in literary activity and greatly contributed to modern literature of Korea, writing critical essaye, editing a pure literary magazine 「THE WASTE LAND」 (PE HUR)
He led a urban life in Seoul through his life, working as an editor of newspaper or magazine.
My investigation shows that his works numbered about 500 in all _ short stories, critical essays, novels and, essays. Among them he devoted himself to short stories and novels in particular.
I had studied his literature as a whole for a long time and I published a book 「A Study of Yum Sangsup」 in 1974 by Korea University press. But there was much to be desired in the study of his novels. So here I want to lay stress on the study of his six early novels in 1920.

The most brilliant works of his at this period are 「BEFORE CRYING OUT FOR
LIBERATION」(MAN SE JEON)「LOVE AND SIN」(SA RANG GWA JEY)「TWO
MINDS」(I SIM). The main themes of them are the national problems-how the Koreans were suffering from tyranny of the Japanese, and the lives and the mentalities of middle class that are the characteristic elements of modern society, and the problems of love and hatred. The original title of his first novel 「BEFORE CRYING OUT FOR LIBERATION」(MAN SE JEON) is 「A GRAVE」 (MYO JI),and the theme represents the oppressed condition of the Koreans at that time. This novel is written by the style of travel description and in a realistic description. It is just like his early short stories in style and description. The story is as follows ; while the hero was studying in Japan,
he received a telegram that his wife was in a serions condition of illness. So he left for home. On his way home, he experienced many happenings. The writer describes the hero's experiences without any decoration and any art in plot.
In 1927, he writes a novel 「LOVE AND SIN」 (SA RANG GWA JEY), which was
one of his successful works. This novel reflects actual social conditions at that time.
The themes of his work 「TWO MINDS」 (I SIM) is resistance to Japan and love
affairs in addition. It looks as if these two novels dealt with interesting love affairs, but a little deeper looking into them shows that they reveals the grief of the oppressed people.

In this essay, I deal with the theme - how he represented the national feeling and emotion-and the writer's consciousness, and to what degree, he realized the social problems of that time. Therefore I lay stress on the analysis of the hero's character.
And in the matter of writer's consciousness I deal with the question whether the main stream of his consciounsness is on the basis of tradition or west.
In conclusion, I can find that his consciousness is on the basis of tradition through his conservative idea and his attitude of living and his interest in the classics of Korea.

He is among the most outstanding modern writers of Korea that wrote realistic and modern works. His early novels shows national emotion at the colonial period and the conservative idea of the modern traditional society. By these I can appreciate his creative talents and the worth of his works.
In 1930s, he wrote many masterpices and one of them was a trilogy 「THREE
GENERATIONS」 (SAM DAE) His works in 1920s have a great value in modern
literature, especially in novels of Korea.
I look forward to many energetic studies of his works.
