대학 졸업예정자의 정신적 강인함과 정신건강의 관계: 대처전략 유형과 취업 스트레스의 매개효과 분석 = Relationship Between Mental Toughness and Mental Health in Prospective University Graduates: Analyzing The Indirect Effects of Coping Strategies and Job-seeking Stress

국문 초록 (Abstract)

목적 본 연구는 취업을 준비하는 대학생의 심리적 고통을 완화하기 위한 방안을 모색하고자 스트레스와 대처의 교류 이론(TTSC; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984)을 토대로 정신적 강인함이 사회적 지지 추구, 문제중심 대처, 회피중심 대처의 세 가지 대처전략과취업 스트레스를 매개로 하여 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 검증하였다.
방법 연구 참여자는 최종 학기에 등록한 대학생 369명이며, 이들의 연령 평균은 23세이다. 자료는 온라인 설문조사를 통해 수집되었고 SPSS와 PROCESS macro 프로그램을 통해 분석되었다. 주요 변인의 관계를 검증하기 위해 기술통계량을 살펴보고 상관분석과 매개효과 분석(model 80; hayes, 2018)을 실시하였다.
결과 첫째, 정신적 강인함이 높을수록 사회적 지지 추구와 문제중심 대처전략을 더 많이 사용하고 회피중심 대처전략을 덜 사용하는것으로 나타났다. 그리고 정신적 강인함이 높고 회피중심 대처전략을 덜 사용할수록 취업 스트레스와 정신건강이 낮아지는 것으로나타났다. 또한, 취업 스트레스를 더 많이 지각할수록 정신건강 문제가 가중되는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 정신적 강인함과 정신건강의 관계에서 회피중심 대처전략과 취업 스트레스의 개별 매개효과 및 순차적 매개효과 모두 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 문제중심 대처전략과 취업 스트레스의 순차적 매개효과도 유의한 것으로 나타났다.
결론 이상의 결과는 정신적 강인함이 당면한 문제를 회피하지 않고 직면하여 해결하도록 이끌어 취업 스트레스를 완화하는 데 기여하며, 이를 통해 대학 졸업예정자의 정신건강을 보호하는 역할을 한다는 것을 시사한다. 이를 바탕으로 교육 및 임상적 시사점을제시하고 연구의 한계와 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 논의하였다.

Objectives This study aimed to explore how mental toughness can effectively reduce the psychological distress of university students in their senior year seeking employment . Based on transactional stress and coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) and using three different types of coping strategies (social support seeking, prob lem-focused coping, avoidance coping) and job-seeking stress as mediators, it investigated how mental tough ness of prospective graduates influences their mental health.
Methods The study participants were 369 university students, whose average age was 23 years, enrolled in their final semester. An online survey was used for data collection, and SPSS software and PROCESS macro, a model ing tool in SPSS, were used for analysis of collected data. To investigate the relationship between the main varia bles, descriptive statistics were examined, followed by correlation analysis and indirect effect analysis (Model 80; Hayes, 2018).
Results First, mental toughness was positively correlated with the coping strategies of social support seeking and problem-focused coping but negatively correlated with avoidance coping. Those with high mental toughness and little use of avoidance coping showed lower levels of job-seeking stress and mental health problems . Perceptions of job-seeking stress were positively correlated with an increase in mental health problems. Second, analyzing the indirect effects of mediators in the relationship between mental toughness and mental health, avoidance coping and job-seeking stress showed significant individual indirect effects and serial indirect effects. Additionally, prob lem-focused coping and job-seeking stress showed significant serial indirect effects.
Conclusions These results suggest that mental toughness contributes to reducing job-seeking stress in pro spective university graduates by helping them confront and resolve problems rather than avoid them, thereby pre venting mental health problems. Based on these findings, educational and clinical implications are discussed, fol lowed by the limitations of the study and suggestions for follow-up research.
