The Grotesque has been rendered as a problematic issue in art history. The Grotesque is not reducible to a genre to which a work belongs. It does not originate in a particular school or artistic theory, but antedates all schools and theories. It seems to be a continuum which may be found in varying degrees in disparate works throughout art history. The term grotesque entered our language with the discovery of certain unusual images in the underground ruins of the Roman empire. The design on the walls and ceiling offered images of beasts fused with animal bodies and birdlike wings, a fish`s tail, human firms that fuse with leaflike patterns weaving plant life, masklike human head, and various mythological figures. They were strange and absurd, suggesting an otherness in preposterous form and effecting in the viewer feelings of fascination, amusement, uneasiness, fear. After the archaeological discovery, the word `grotesque` began to be used as a noun that called the strange ornamental figure. And soon the word extended the meaning to adjective sense modifying the expression provoking laughter-fear and humor-horror in combination. Although the grotesque in art and literature has been regarded as a preposterous form by critics and many people, it has functioned as a manner of description of an estranged or alienated world and a method of revelation of the immanent problems of the world of rationality. The playwrights and directors using the grotesque in their work distort or exaggerate the surface of reality in order to tell a qualitative truth about it. In this light, they employ the grotesque to shock the spectators by manipulating, undercutting, and even dismantling conventional ideas and norms. In this manner, the grotesque serves not only to satirize the accepted ideas of the world and to heighten its aesthetic values, but to expose the spectators to the hidden meanings beneath the superficial appearance. The grotesque as a manner of mimesis in theatre is a double-edged word. On the one hand, it is a word to describe a view of the world in which the world has inconsistent intrinsic qualities and values and thus is not reduced to completely comprehensible elements. In other words, the grotesque functions as a mirror to reflect the world as incomplete and contradict in itself. On the other hand, the grotesque means a way of representation that exaggerates, distorts, and reconstruct the mode and the order of the world which, in this case, is supposed to be cohesive and consistent. The grotesque in theatre seems to have forfeited the significant role as a world view and to have generalized itself as an expressional technique in drama and spectacle. The condition of post-modern society in which the border between center and margin has become vague causes the grotesque to lose its distinctiveness as a view of the world. But this tendency doesn`t mean that the grotesque have become useless nowadays. Instead, the concept of grotesque has been transformed to have a more generalized meaning as the society changed throughout modern history. In this thesis, what I try to do is not to give a more precise definition of the grotesque but to show the significance and value of the grotesque in theatre. As there have been a few general or in-depth precedent studies on the grotesque in the academic field of theatre, I would like to provide with general understanding of the grotesque and concentrate on the grotesque as a technique of expression and as a way of critique which I anticipate would most benefit the playwrights, directors, and critics who are engaged in current theatrical activities.
