오장환 시의 신체 훼손 이미지에 나타난 시적 인식 양상 연구 = Study on the poetic perception of images related to body destruction in Oh Janghwan`s poems

Images of body destruction can be largely categorized as illness, loss, damage, and disappearance. This study looked into the pattern in perception of ego, subject, space, etc, through the images of illness, intentional damage, and destruction found in the poems written by Oh Janghwan. In terms of the problems of self-perception found in body destruction images, Oh Janghwan perceives the self from a perspective of an ill person. He looks for the source of illness inside the poetic narrator and believes the symptoms are caused by isolation from the others. However, instead of trying to end the isolation, he chooses to damage his own body. He does not abandon the self-deprecating and critical viewpoint. Also, he dismisses even sensuality as something unproductive and chooses self-destruction. The subjects in Oh`s poems are either languishing or intoxicated in terms of the perception of the subjects in the body destruction images. The narrator recognizes these subjects as someone who is dirty, listless, or lost. Most of them belong to the low class and, even if they do not, the subjects are still sick and lost. Instead of trying to get out of the misery, they resist passively by wandering or destroying themselves. Oh maintains cynical attitude toward them instead of sympathizing or finding hope. In terms of the space of the body destruction images, most places are perceived as dirty, sad, negative, or lost without direction. Also, these are places where they encounter original sin or corruption by staying at one place with their illness. The reason for all the hopelessness and misery can be found in the illness inside the subjects` ego. Oh`s poems begin with negative and cynical perception of ego and maintain negative and cynical attitude toward the subjects and space. This is a result from the poetic perception of collapse of the youth during the colonial period. He is showing resistance against the colony by rejecting ego, subject, and space and revealing negative attitude toward them.
