East Asian Romance is a genre which expresses particular dreams and aspirations of the intellectual literati in shi(士) classes in the form in which a main character encounters a person who knows his worth. The subject of their dreams and aspirations expressed in romance is the desire for the winning the confidence and acknowledgement of another persons [知遇] . This expression of the desire for the winning the confidence and acknowledgement of another persons, we may interpret it, is characterized essentially as the literary realization of the social and political desire of the intellectual literati in shi classes. Romance is divided into two kinds of lower types. One is the type in which a hero is loved, the other is the type in which a hero is acknowledged. We call the former romantic love type [愛情類] , the latter encounter with some person appreciating hero type[知遇類]. Before the 17th century in the history of korean novel, romance had occupied the main current. But after that century when the full-length novels in Chinese characters and the full-length novels in Korean characters newly emerged and came into vogue, romance had nudged out of the main current. Here one of the facts to which we have to pay attention is the emergence of works which parodied romance. In romantic love type, hero is the subject of desire, heroine is nothing but the object of that desire. But in the works parodied romance, hero does not play the subject of desire any longer. On the contrary he slides down to the object of desire, or else both of them appear as the subject of desire together. In this respect, it is affirmed that the works parodied romance utterly reversed the standards of romance. This reversion is connected with the social and historical situations in late Choson Dynasty.
