韋菴 張志淵의 諸論說에 나타난 敎育觀 = A Study on Jang Jee Youn's Ideas of Education Represented in His Discourses

At the beginning of collasping of the Yi dynasty Jang Jee Youn was born (1864) and he survived the Japanese annexation of Korea (1921). Engaged in the press, he strove for reconstruction of the Korea, even though his efforts went for nothing. It must be estimated highly that hp rendered distinguished services to his country as a Journalist, enlightening movement activist, and patriot. While in the Hwang Sung Shin Mun office he strove for enlightening the people and getting them able to stand by themselves.
When the Ul-Sa protection treaty was concluded in 1905, he wrote the editorial, Shi II Ya Bang Sung Dae Gok. The editorial instiled an independence spirit into the hearts of the people, and it not only got him being out of the chief editor but also put him in Jail. After releaspcl from prison however he did not yield under Japanese pressure as before, he rather formed the Dae Han Ja Gang Hoe with like-minded persons in 1906 and published the bulletin of the Dae Han Ja Gang Hoe Bo. He enlightened the people on the independence of Korea by his many editorials of the bulletin before the breaking up the Dae Han Ja Gang Hoe next year. All his editorials filled with thoughts of enlightenment to stir up t he people an independence spirit and infuse patriotism into hearts of them in order to enrich the country.
His major editorials are the Ja Gang Hoe Mun Dap (Why did he organize the Ja Gang Hoe? What is the way to do self -sustaining ? ), the Kuk Ga Bin Yak Jee Go (What makes the country poor and weak?), Mun Yak Jee Pye (The theoretical knowledge without utility brings about only evil practices.), the Kuk Mun Kwan Kye Ron (We must recognize the excellence of the Korean language to the other languages.), the Dan Che Youn Hu Min Jok Ga Bo (To cooperate and unite is the best way for the prosperity of the country.), the Kwa Geo Eui Sang Hwang (We must have an understanding of history and meet the challenge.), the Hyoun Je Eui Jeong Hyoung (Now we must educate the people and forster national industry with our whole hearts.), the Kyoung Go (For our survival it is the only way educate the people. Let us invest all our efforts in education!), the Sik San Heung Up Eui Pil Yo (By forstering national industry we must build up our national power.), the Bu San Gu (Don't behave yourself worse than a beast!), the Cheon Shi Woo Shin (Do your best in your field!), the study on the method of diffusion of education, and so on.
In the editorial of the Kuk Jo Go Sa he explained how large was each territory of the Dan Gun Chosen, the Gee Ja Chosen, the Ko Gu Ryo, the Shin La, and the Baek Je, how early they had taught the peoplp their letters and that Korea had been a civilized nation from ancient times and at the same time a moralistic nation respecting for benevolence and righteousness. His other writings are the Chosen Yoo Kyo Youn Won (This is a book about in what manner Confucianism was introduced into Korea from China, in what manner it changed in each period of the Shin La, the Koryo and the Yi dynasty and what it was.), II Sa Yoo Sa (This is a book about the outstanding figures living in seclusion. This book introduced figures with a strong sense of justice, patriotism, filial piety, chivalry and service regardless of class and sex.), the Dae Han Shin Jee Jee(This introduced the condition of not only his country but also foreign countries to the people in order to build up his home country for herself.), the Egup Gun Se Sa (This book was written for the purpose of convincing that the economicinvasion of France caused the collapse of Egypt.), the Man Kuk Sa Mul Gee Won Youk Sa (this book on the one hand characterizes human geography, and on the other it is a kind of encyclopedia introducing things of those days.), the Nong Jeong Jeon Seo (This book introduced the new agricultural knowledge.), and so on.
He was also proficient in poetry and prose and expressed love of his country by composing the nature poems. Besides he strove for enlightening the people by lectures and prospectus of journals as ever. He had the opinion that we had to eradicate illiteracy of the people and infuse patriotism into the hearts of them so as to enrich the country. He holded that at first we had to eradicate illiteracy of the people by educating them in order to enrich the country, secondly we had to check the economic invasion of foreign capital by increasing the income with economic activity and accumulating national capital by saving. For him it was most important for the people to know the Korean history and geographical feature and to know under what condition the world was and in what manner the people of the advanced countries played part in the world. He also holded that all of the people had to work hard having respct for technique and practicality. He emphasized that the idler had to be purged, the government had to work for the public good in behalf of the people and lay the foundations for an industrial country by modernizing the country. He was an enlightenment thinker and educationist rather than a simple journalist and patriot. Even though his words and writings were given seventy years ago, those awaken the people as before.
