Han Heuk-gu stayed in the United States for six years after studying in 1928 and returned in the spring of 1934. He crossed the Pacific Ocean to study literature, studied literature at North Park College in Chicago in 1929, and transferred to the Department of Newspaper at Temple University in Philadelphia in 1932. In this article, we looked at English-American literature works translated by Han Heuk-gu and examined how a series of works influenced the establishment of his literature. This is because the translation of literary works inevitably affects the formation of a literary view of the translator in the process of selecting and translating works, and a series of activities form the basis of Han Heuk-gu's creation and the world of works.
Since Han Heuk-gu studied English literature in the United States, his translation goes beyond transferring language and contains the atmosphere and attributes of world literature experienced by colonial youth in the early 20th century. In Japanese colonial era, the experience of colonial youth in the United States provides an opportunity to reflect on ethnic issues in the context of world history. While colonial Joseon writers opened their creative horizons focusing on the hardships of the people moaning under Japanese oppression, Joseon intellectuals who moved to the United States witnessed common problems of mankind produced by empires and capital based on the sorrows of the weak people. It was not only a problem in a specific area of literature, but also a negative painting of civilization caused by the modern era of the 20th century.
Han Heuk-gu's literature is embodied in the American experience, and he was deeply fascinated by Irving Babbit's humanism, who worked at Harvard University. He was aware of the flow of humanism in the 20th century through Babbit and faced up to the change in the style of literature that captures it according to the flow of history. The English-American novels translated by Han Heuk-gu are John Goldsworthy (1867-1933), The Dead Man, and The Lost Novel by Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941). Both suggest the problem of human existence in the era of capitalism.
Han Heuk-gu not only objectified Joseon's sorrow while studying and studying English literature in the United States, but also encountered universal human problems. Facing both the power and shadow of the empire, he paid attention to the expansion of capitalism and the resulting human rights abuses. It can be seen that his view of literature has its origins in universal humanity. Han Heuk-gu provided an opportunity to think about universal contemporary human problems together by introducing the Anglo-American literature he acquired to readers in his home country even after returning from studying abroad.
