蔡萬植小說硏究 : 作中人物의 現實批判的 姿勢를 中心으로 = A Study on Chae Man Sik's Novel : Especially on the reality-critique's attituae through the characters

CHAE MAN SIK was an ironical-writer who wrote the novel to criticize the social situations through Korea's typical flaver and satire in the times Korea was a Japanese colony.
As all the social situation of those days when he wrote as a novelist was under the marginal one being overpowered by the Japanese oppressors, he couldn't express his one's point of view such a plain speaking that he couldn't help but use the techmical skill of round-about description.
It is the aim of this thesis studing how he criticiged, if axy, the social situation in those dags, and why he couldn't help sustaining the critical attitude to it. He was the man who was born in the early times of period when his country was being oppressed by Japanese, kept his life during the opperession.
As soon as his country become independent, he had the misfortune of his country being divided into two parts, and so he was unfortunate one in the miserable period who wandered about among the disease and the poverty.
He, who went abroad to study to Japan as a rich farmer's son, witnessed the korean massacre committed by Japanese when the kwangdong worst earthquake was broken out, and he stopped studying and returned home country. He also chose the same life attitude as the young intelligentsia did in those days.
Therefore, it seemed that he couldn't help but keep the critical, attitude because of an inconsistent social system and discontended social situation. He criticiged the social reality in that time by making an appearance of two kinds of characters in his work.
One is that when many young intelligentsia having been educated the new literature, met with the real society, under the infuence on the hot wind of bland-neweducation spread out as a fever, they couldn't find out the place where they should stand.
They expressed the negative situation of that society, through the frustration, self-scorn, self-reflection, etc, by describing the blind-educational situation, the citigens' poverty, the farmers' gathering into city, and their's downfall to be the labourers,
The other is that he criticiged a group of egoist and persons of acting in concert with Japanese government by making an appearence ignorant persons, who offirm the realities of life, in the historical and race consciousness to let the readers see their thoughts and conducts in negative view.
He was a great writer in the point of criticiging the realities of life but encouraging the hope to the readers who were living a gloomy life, by reflecting the historical consciousness, the history circulates itself, in his work.
when the realities of life are increasing more gloomy, the novel involving the will of reality-critique will have the persuasion and meaning the more. In this point of view, CHAE MANSik's novel gives us a lot of deep sympathy till now, and great meanings to the history of korean novel.
