전북지역 마한 연구의 현황과 과제 = The Current State and Tasks of Researches on Mahan in North Jeolla Province (Jeollabuk-do)

The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of researches on Mahan in North Jeolla Province, raise issues, and suggest directions for future research. To this end, this study subdivided and reviewed the results of researches that have been con ducted, in terms of the concept of Mahan, spatial scope, rise and fall, and external ex changes.
A review of the current state of Mahan researches in North Jeolla Province reveals that remarkable achievements have been made over the last few decades. but there are still a lot of tasks to be solved.
First, there are issues related to the time, space, and material culture of Mahan.
There are the relationship between ‘Han (韓)’ and ‘Mahan (馬韓)’, the beginning of Mahan, the reason why Mahan culture declined around the 1st century BC, and the rela tionship with groups whose identity includes Tanalmun pottery (beating patterned pot tery), mounded tombs, and four-pillar square-type dwellings after the 2nd century AD.
Although it fell under the territory of Baekje politically with regard to the time period of fall, the culture continued to strongly show the elements of Mahan. Therefore, it is nec essary to define whether this society is Mahan or Baekje.
There should also be a re-discussion of the spatial scope of Mahan, especially where the eastern Baekje is in North Jeolla Province. The circular-type dwellings known as one of the material cultures of Mahan are distributed throughout the entire western part of Gyeongsangnam-do, including the eastern part of Jeollanam-do. The question here is whether they can be understood as Mahan culture. When these issues are resolved, the eastern Mahan in North Jeolla Province is also likely to change.
Next, it is about the relationship between the indigenous culture ‘Songgukri-type culture’ and the immigrant culture ‘clay-stripe pottery culture’. Many materials showing intercultural contact have been discovered, and if the mutual contact and dynamics be tween the groups are reconstructed, such as the issue of how the two cultures coexisted in a certain region, it will also be very meaningful.
Lastly, a multifaceted and more three-dimensional review of external exchanges is required because the exchanges with Baekje, Silla, Gaya, and neighboring countries that coexisted with Mahan are likely to have changed and developed through interaction. In particular, a close examination of Jukmak-dong Site in Buan, which shows the maritime culture and international exchanges of ancient East Asia, will be able to reconstruct a vareity of Mahan exchanges at that time.
