“JanghwaHongryeonjeon” is based on actual events that occurred in Cheolsan County in Pyongan, Hyojong (1649-1659). “JanghwaHongryeonjeon” combines real events with fiction. The story is set in the Joseon Dynasty, but we can still find an aspect of our lives that is repeated within it. This paper is based on the main characters of “JanghwaHongryeonjeon” and recounts the contradictions and absurdities of society at that time as well as the reality of domestic violence that prevailed in that society. This paper studies what transforms the precious and good Janghwa and Hongryeon into vicious ghosts, traces the life of the sisters to clarify the meaning of the existence of a woman who was reversed from a flower to a ghost, and examines the psychological context, problems, and meanings of the women characters.
In the image of sisters as “flower-ghosts,” we can see that the view of women in society at that time was an image of the object in the form of “flowers” and “ghosts.” In order to understand the isolated psychological state of Janghwa and Hongryeon, we discuss the first method of parenting, the last testimony of Mr. Kang’s death, and, finally, the way of expressing the emotions of Janghwa and Hongryeon, thus, drawing out the psychological problems of the sisters.
First, the feelings of anxiety and fear that were felt by the mother were conveyed to the sisters so that the guilt for not protecting the mother was mixed with resentment and betrayal of the father. On one side, for the sisters, hatred of their father, resentment of their stepmother’s theft of their mother’s role, and guilt toward their mother evoked anger. Next, the sisters’ longing for their mother made them unable forget her, and they could not accept changes in her relationship with their stepmother. They were unable to flexibly manage the altered relationship in their home, and the self-esteem of Janghwa and Hongryeon was deeply damaged from their relationship with their stepmother and inability to escape the confusion. Finally, they faced the pressure of virtues and appearances required of them as women, so it was difficult for them to escape from fixed images such as beautiful flowers made of half their own and half their own. Their lives were tied to the gazes of others, and they lived a life of “showing.”
Next, Janghwa and Hongryeon, who used to be like flowers, are transformed into “ghosts” through death. In the process of the conversion from precious beings into ghosts, the reader can interpret the form of a sister’s life as varied as the difference between the existence of something valuable and ghosts. The wound the stepmother had received eventually settled inside the sisters. The feelings that were suppressed were manifested in an uncontrollable anger, leaving them in a state of their control and control. In this way, the oppressed self that was trapped in the flower is expressed in the form of a ghost. The inner conflict caused by the sister who was wearing flowers, with their implied symbolic meaning, showed how the individual’s existence in society was alienated. Thus, the symbol of Janghwa and Hongryoen becoming a ghost means that the long-pressured oppressed mind is so strong that its dark shadow is shaped into an image opposite to that of the “flower,” showcasing the sisters’ dark attributes. Thus, the ghost depicts the dark side of Janghwa and Hongryoen. Lastly, the two sisters, Janghwa and Hongryeon, were too close to each, like conjoined twins, two bodies but one life. Since they had never fallen into each other since their birth, they fixed dark shadows on each other without gaining an objective perspective.
Eventually, the image of a “good child” established the victim’s identity, and the good itself was eventually killed by their stepmother. Janghwa and Hongreoyn, who refused to communicate, eventually were unable to escape the distorted framework and could not see a way out, so they were equipped with the consciousness of becoming victims. In the context in which Janghwa and Hongreoyn were damaged by the stepmother and perceived as victims, the way relationships were formed with parents and the various social ideas of the day were internalized and impressed the idea that the sisters were passive beings. Because of this, the characters are seen in the forms of “flowers” and “ghosts,” and there are two perspectives of the contemporary generation looking at women. If the flower is the image of a woman who conforms and obeys, then the woman who violates the social order appears in an unrelenting spirit. This may represent the double standard that society demands from women.
