In this study I researched the mantra chanting and esoterical performing aspects of the Suryuk ceremony text through three temple’s rituals, all of which have been designated as national intangible cultural assets: Samhwa temple, Jingoan temple and Baekwoon temple. The Bogongyang·Bohoihyang Jineon was chanted, whose mantra is recited 23 times in Araetnyeok, which refers to the southern region of Suryukjae, location of Baekwoon temple. They also recited the same mantras twice more than the ritual text, which is recommended to be chanted five times as the pertinent ritual process. The two temples are Utnyeok, which refers to the northern region where the Samhwa temple is located in Gangwon province, the Jingoan temple is in the metropolitan city of Seoul, and all the monks who performed the rituals came from Seoul. Thus, this ritual tradition belongs to the Seoul and Gyeong-gi province areas, situated in the northern part of South Korea.
This means that the Korean Suryuk ceremony was conducted on the basis of the ritual text influenced from China, subsequently, further Sanskrit mantras and esoteric Buddhist performances were added in Korea. The Suryuk ceremony proliferated in the early days of the Josun Dynasty, propagated by its founders as consolation for those sacrificed for founding new dynasty Josun. After several centuries, Buddhist temples held the Suryuk ceremony to console and honor the memory of those who were killed in wars, such as the Imjinweran and Byeogja Horan. In particular, Koreans recited the two mantras Bogongyang Jineon making an offer of food, money, flowers etc and Bohoihyang Jineon sharing of the merit with the families of the bereaved. These aspects are close to the method of esoterical Buddhism.
If we check the overall contents of ritual literature, there are two kind of literary style. One is poetic, the other is narrational sentences. The former is praise poetry, sung with a melisma melody by professional musician monks; the latter is of explanatory notes recited in a close syllabic pattern by common monks. Those are used to praise Buddha, bodhisattva, the instruction of Buddhism, or to explain the ritual meaning and process. Meanwhile Sanskrit mantras delivered the substantial function of rituals like as removing all evil deeds, translating paper money symbols to gold or silver money for heaven, and transfiguring the offered substance to a sanctified one increased in quantity.
The faith behavior of the Mantra originated with early Buddhism in India. It was used for the propagation of Buddhism, emphasizing the benefit and efficacy of the mantra melody. In Korea, It was further developed in transcription and ornamentation of the mantra letters, and recited or sung in ritual with percussion instruments with monks and believers together. Most Korean Buddhists couldn’t understand the ritual’s meaning since they were unable to read Chinese ritual text. But the Sanskrit mantra’s intrinsic purpose being just its sound, Koreans recited those frequently during the Suryuk ceremony. This is an important point distinguishing the Chinese and Korean Suryuk ceremonies.
