his study analyzes the folk tales of Gimhae from an intangible cultural heritage perspective, aiming to propose effective strategies for their preservation and transmission. We examined eleven collections of folk tales published since the 1970s, identifying significant shifts in their collection methods and utilization patterns over time. Our analysis revealed that early collections from the 1970s emphasized the originality and local authenticity of the tales. This contrasts with local history compilations from the 1980s and 1990s, where narratives were simplified and altered for educational and cultural purposes. From the 2020s onwards, the folk tales have been re-contextualized as cultural heritage through extensive digital content production.
The folk tales of Gimhae can be categorized by three core characteristics. First, narratives concerning dragon worship and village rituals (Dangje) reflect a deep connection to the Nakdong River environment, expressing the community's belief in sacred beings for prosperity and protection. Second, stories like the downfall of temples and the legend of the miser Kim Dong-ji highlight the ethics of sharing and mutual support by criticizing the monopolization of communal resources, thereby reinforcing values vital for collective survival. Third, strongman tales and the Jocha Mountain legend embody a collective imagination that remembers suppressed power and envisions future restoration, demonstrating a unique form of resilience.
These narratives transcend simple oral tradition, serving as intangible cultural heritage that embodies harmony with nature, communal ethics, and the memory of historical hardships and potential. Based on these findings, we propose a comprehensive set of transmission strategies, including the restoration and reinterpretation of narratives, spatial storytelling on local sites, the revitalization of intergenerational transmission, and the establishment of institutional and legal protection. Ultimately, this research posits that Gimhae's folk tales are a critical resource for reconstructing local identity and enriching contemporary discourse on intangible heritage.
