육군 보병 지휘관들의 권력 유형과 병사들의 군대생활 만족간의 관계 연구 = A Study on the Relationship between the Power Type of Army Infantary Commanders and the Satisfaction of Soldier's Military Life

This study was designed to find out the relationship between the power types of ROK Army officers and the satisfaction of the soldier's military life.
As power types have close relationship with leadership effects, several studies have performed to clarify this relationship and some of them reported signifivant correlation between them.
In this study, a canonical analysis was conducted to specify this relationship with the data from the sample of 802 infantary soldiers in the ROK Amry. Six power types were used as a set of multiple independent variables and five satisfaction factors were used as a set of multiple dependent variables.
As a result of the canonical analysis, four significant canonical functions were identified. Function 1 showed that a leader who mainly administer referent power, introducing reward and legitimate power properly, makes his soldiers satisfy with military life except relationships among companions. Fuction 2 showed that a leader who seldom adminster legitimate power and coercive power makes his followers feel satisfaction with considerate leader behavior but gives the impression of unfairness in troop management. Function 3 indicated that a leader who mainly use legitimate power and hardly use referent and coervice power gives his followers the impression that he is trying to be fair in troop management but makes them feel that the troop operations are unfair. Althought the weight is very low, function 4 showed that a leader who adminster expert, association and reward power with seldom use of referent power gives his followers a marginal satisfaction for rational troop operation and impartial troop management but not makes them feel satisfaction in military life.
The results of this study are incosistent with those of previous research. One of the possible explanations for the differences could be due to different analysis methods. So the detailed interpretation for the results of this study should be postponed until more data are accumulated. In this point of view, this study is still exploratory.
