The purpose of this study is to review the present level of the quality of working life of young laborers in order to devise a new promotion scheme for the future and to search for a new development strategies.
For this study the researcher drew up 28 items for questions concerning the quality of working life of 21~30-years-olds workers who are working in the lathe shops. As survey areas, the researcher chose Hawangshipni district in Seoul and 85 interviewees responded to the interview.
The outcome and discussion which the researcher found are the following:
1. The interviewees did not understand correctly what the quality of working life is but they did feel that the quality of working life of laborers had not sufficiently satisfied their needs and desires for the betterment of their living standards.
2. The wage levels they receive are not sufficient to satisfy their quality of working life. Their gross income levels are about 350,000~500,000 won every month, and from which 70,000 won is reduced as food expenses.
3. The bonus amounts they receive are not reasonably decided in order to meet their requirements, so that it is unable to say they receive fair compensation except their over-time charge.
4. Safe and healthy working conditions are not afforded for their physical conditions that minimize illness and injury, and it is not proper to say that their benefits and services are adequate to enhance the quality of working life of young laborers.
5. They eagerly desire to get the opportunity to learn new and multiple skills and to use and develop human capacities.
6. They also hope to get the information about total work process and consequences of own actions as basis for self-regulation.
7. Opportunity for continued growth and security and prospective expectation to use newly acquired knowledge and skills in future is their highest aspiration.
8. They also hope to form a good relationship with the supportive primary groups and friendly and helpful face-to-face work groups.
In view of this, this researcher present the following as the conclusion of this study:
1. The employers of the lathe shops should play a leading role in the enhancement of the quality of working life of workers; therefore, it is desirable for the executives to encourage the values and the desire for achievement of workers, their motives for commitment, and the degree of vitalization of the quality of working life of workers combining with their personal benefits and services, social welfare, and a higher standard of living.
2. It is required to pay a great deal of efforts in order to promote adequate and fair compensations, special aids and services for workers, and social and recreational programs.
3. It is required for the workers to have the right to withhold personal information from employer, to openly disagree with views of superiors, and the right to equitable treatment.
4. It is also desirable to give continuing compensation to the workers who present good ideas for resolving technological problems and management improvement.
5. More than anything else, in the quality of working life of workers, the emphasis should be placed upon the increases of the worker's income and the betterment of the worker's living standards. In addition to the material compensation, the quality of working life of workers should be developed according to the theories of motivation in order that the workers put their spontanity and initiative for their common interests.
By doing so, the quality of working life of workers can be a cornerstione of modernization and generative power for the development of the lathe shops.
