교육철학 이론화의 과제: 실천학으로서의 교육철학에서 ‘이론’의 지위와 그 소용 = The Task of Theorizing in the Philosophy of Education:The Status and Use of “Theory” in the Practical Philosophy of Education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 한국의 교육철학연구 60년사를 기리며 미래 교육철학연구의 ‘이론화’의 방향과 성격을 탐색하기 위하여, 지난 60년간 『교육철학연구』에 출간된 논문들을 오늘날 교육철학연구의 지배적인 패러다임인 ‘실천적 교육철학하기’의 관점에서 분석한다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 아래 세 가지 단계를 거치며 그 논의가 발전된다. 먼저 시대별 연구 주제와 방법의 성격을 현장에 대한 ‘실천적 관심의 성격’에 따라 분류하고 분석하여, 교육철학에서 실천을 다루는 두 가지 경향(약한 이론화와 강한 이론화)을 귀납적으로 추출한다. 둘째, 교육철학연구가 교육실천과 맺는 관계나 그 방법적 접근에 대한 전제에서의 차이에 따라, 이 두 경향성을 각각 ‘실천현장-연속성 모델’과 ‘실천현장-비연속성 모델’이라는 두 가지 이론적 모델로 정식화한다. 셋째, 이 이론화 모델을 하나의 분석의 틀로 하여, 지난 60년간 출간된 교육철학 연구물들 중 이론화 작업이 두드러진 연구의 특징 및 한계를 다시 분석하고 평가한다. 이러한 단계적 논의를 통해 연구자들은 미래 한국 교육철학연구의 방향과 지향점을 다음 몇 가지로 제안한다. 첫째, 교육철학연구의 기초적 작업으로서 ‘사상연구’의 중요성이 다시 강조된다. 둘째, 실천에 ‘대한’ 이론과 실천을 ‘위한’ 이론화를 통한 교육철학연구의 존재 가치 확보가 중요하다. 셋째, 비연속적 모델의 이론화 출발점으로서 연구자는 ‘자기 전제에 대한 객관화’가 요구된다. 넷째, 실천학으로서 교육철학은 언제나, 즉 연속적 모델의 이론화든 비연속적 모델의 이론화든, 연구자가 발 딛고 서있는 맥락과 교육현실에서 자신의 이론적 전거를 찾고 다시 거기로 되돌아갈 때, 오랜 이론적 과제였던 학문적 식민지성을 비로소 극복할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper commemorates the 60-year history of philosophy of education research in Korea and explores the direction and character of future theorization in the field. It analyzes papers published over the past six decades in Philosophy of Education Research, focusing on the currently dominant paradigm of "doing practical philosophy of education." The discussion unfolds in three stages.
First, the authors classify and analyze the research topics and methodological characteristics of each era according to the nature of “practical concerns with the educational field.” Through this analysis, two trends in how practice is addressed in the philosophy of education—weak theorization and strong theorization—are inductively derived.
Second, based on differing assumptions about the methodological approaches of the philosophy of education and educational practice, and their relationship, the two trends are theoretically formalized into two models: the Practice-Continuity Model and the Practice-Discontinuity Model.
Third, using these theorization models as an analytical framework, the paper reexamines and evaluates the characteristics and limitations of notable theorization-focused studies from the past 60 years.
Through this stepwise discussion, the authors propose the following directions for the future of Korean philosophy of education research. First, we should reaffirm the importance of ideological or thought-based studies as foundational works in the philosophy of education. Second, we should secure the value of the philosophy of education through theorization about practice and for practice. Third, we should emphasize the need for objectifying one's own assumptions as a starting point for theorization within the discontinuity model. Fourth, we should recognize that as a practical discipline, the philosophy of education must always return to its theoretical foundations within the context of lived educational realities, whether through a continuity or discontinuity model. Only then can it overcome the long-standing theoretical challenge of academic coloniality.
