나아가 다수의 선행연구에서 참고한 CCSARP(Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project)의 전략 유형을 기초로 분석틀을 마련하였다.
The purpose of this study is to pay attention to the aspects of language that Koreans and Americans use in their daily lives, and to reveal differences in cultural awareness & linguistic strategies between the two groups. This study not only deals with the internal structure and expressed form of the language used by Koreans and Americans, but also attempts to deduce and interpret goals, motives, intentions, and methods as internal mechanisms. In other words, this is a sociolinguistic study of Korean and American interaction, and also a study that contributes to practical educational contents in the perspective of language education.
Many scholars who have studied cross-cultural communication have argued that people who have been socialized in different cultures tend to understand the other's speech based on their native culture. According to them, there is a possibility that communication will be difficult between participants who have different cultural backgrounds because of the possibility of different understanding of the same expression. Furthermore, in a situation of intercultural communication, the content of second language education can be said to include ways to overcome this difficulty.
L2 learners hope to be able to communicate successfully using the target language. In order to achieve this, learners should understand not only linguistic knowledge but also cultural knowledge of the target language. This is also the explanation for the active study that have been done recently about
this also explains why there have been active study on
educational contents such as appreciation, praise, apology, request, and rejection in the field of Korean education as a foreign language. In particular, ‘request act’ has had priority to be studied and taught being an act that could threaten the face of both speaker and listener.
Therefore, this paper tried to compare and analyze the awareness of politeness and the linguistic strategy for politeness of Korean and American especially focusing on the situation of making request. The cultural awareness of each group is expected to play a role as internal mechanism when people choose strategy to carry out their requests. Furthermore, this study aims to find out why American L2 learners unintentionally produce awkward or rude Korean sentences when they make request.
The study began with analyzing the scripts of the same drama screened in the U.S. and South Korea and reviewing prior studies to choose a proper speech act in which the difference between the two groups would be most evident. The analysis frame was prepared based on the strategy type of Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) referenced in a number of prior studies. A survey was conducted including DCT(Discourse Completion Task) to collect data. The analysis result revealed the difference between the awareness and strategy of the two groups and therefore the causes for possible communication failure could be deduced.
First, the two groups showed differences in the use of strategies. Unlike Americans who preferred indirect strategies in most situations, Koreans often preferred direct strategies in relation to different variables related to politeness. Cultural and linguistic differences were also found which include appropriate contents and attitudes that are required to make a request in Korea. Furthermore, the reason why the Korean expressions spoken by American L2 learners were often regarded as rude or awkward, even though they did not intend to be so, could be deduced. The L2 learners were not fully aware of the fact that just by using honorific in Korean could cause problems during a conversation if they had used direct expressions.
The significance of this study comes from the fact that it analyzed the patterns and the possible cause of unwanted communication failure by looking into the daily speech and cultural awareness of people from two different cultures. Hope this paper could contribute to the development of Korean education as a foreign language.
