대학혁신의 상징과 제도화된 욕망에 대한 비판적 담론 분석: 미네르바대학교와 태재대학교를 중심으로 = Symbolic and Institutional Desire for Innovation in Korean Higher Education: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Minerva and Taejae University

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 미네르바대학교와 태재대학교를 둘러싼 고등교육 담론을 분석하여, 해외 혁신대학이 한국 사회에서 어떠한 의미를 획득하고 제도적 상상과 혁신 욕망을 매개하는지 고찰한다. “왜 한국 사회는 태재대를 ‘한국형 미네르바’로 칭했는가”라는 질문에 주목하되, 이를 외부의 일방적 명명이 아니라 태재대의 자기 서사, 언론 프레이밍, 정책·전문가 담론의 상호참조 속에서 형성된 의미화 과정으로 본다. 연구자료는 한국 언론에 나타난 두 대학의 관련 기사와 칼럼, 기관 홍보 자료와 공식 메시지, 대학혁신 및 미래 교육 관련 정책·담론 텍스트, 이들과 상호 참조 관계를 이루는 학술 문헌 등 공개된 텍스트로 구성하였다. 분석 결과, 미네르바대는 한국 담론장에서 하나의 구체적 대학이라기보다 상징적 참조가 되었으며, 태재대는 이러한 상징 자원을 빌려 한국 고등교육 개혁의 대안적 형상으로 자리 잡았다. 이 과정에서 미네르바대는 실제 제도적 복합성이나 한계보다 혁신성과 선도성을 압축적으로 표상하는 기호로 소비되었고, 태재대는 단순한 비교 대상이 아니라 고등교육 개혁에 대한 기대와 제도적 상상력이 결합된 대상으로 재현되는 경향을 보였다. 그뿐만 아니라, 이러한 담론은 고등교육의 공공성, 불평등, 제도적·맥락적 차이와 같은 논점을 상대적으로 배경화하였다. 명시적 반대 담론은 희소하였으며, 법·제도적 제약, 운영 인프라, 비용 부담, 형평성 문제와 같은 일부 비판적 단서는 대체로 적용 가능성, 운영적 보완, 학생 지원 체계의 문제로 재배치되는 양상을 보였다. 본 연구는 두 대학을 둘러싼 담론이 한국 고등교육의 위기와 미래를 서사화하는 방식임을 드러내며, 향후 대학혁신은 제도적 욕망과 상징 정치가 교차하는 관점에서 비판적으로 이해될 필요가 있음을 주장하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the Korean higher education discourse surrounding Minerva University and Taejae University through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis. It explores how the model of an innovative foreign university is discursively constructed in South Korea and how it operates as a vehicle for institutional imagination and aspirations for reform. Rather than asking whether Taejae University actually resembles Minerva in substantive terms, the study foregrounds a discursive question: why has Korean society felt the need to frame Taejae as a “Korean Minerva”? In doing so, it approaches this framing not as a matter of unilateral external labeling, but as a process shaped by Taejae University’s self-narrative, media framing, and policy and expert discourse. The study draws on a corpus of publicly available texts, including Korean media articles and columns on Minerva University, institutional promotional materials and official messages from Taejae University, policy and public discourse texts on higher education innovation and future education, and academic literature that intersects with these discursive formations. The analysis is grounded in Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and supplemented by insights from the discourse-historical approach, enabling an integrated examination of text, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings show that, within Korean discourse, Minerva is represented less as a concrete institution than as a symbolic point of reference condensing ideas such as the campusless university, the future-oriented university, and the innovative university. Taejae University, in turn, appropriates these symbolic resources while also seeking to construct its own institutional identity as an alternative model for higher education reform in Korea. In this process, Minerva is consumed less in terms of its institutional complexity and limitations than as a signifier of innovation and institutional distinctiveness, while Taejae is constructed not only as an object of empirical comparison but also as a site where reformist aspirations are articulated. The analysis also suggests that this discourse tends to marginalize or background issues such as inequality and differences in institutional context. Explicit and independent counter-discourses appear relatively limited, while critical cues concerning legal and institutional constraints, operational infrastructure, cost burdens, and equity issues tend to be reframed as matters of applicability, operational improvement, or student support. This study argues that the discourse surrounding Minerva and Taejae is not merely about particular universities, but about the way Korean higher education narrates its own crisis, reform agenda, and imagined future. It therefore calls for innovation discourse to be understood not primarily as a matter of institutional comparison, but as a discursive construction shaped by the intersection of institutional desire and symbolic politics.
