Sea life, and especially fish varieties are an important part of the ecological environment and are the base for the fishermen to earn their livelihood. Nonetheless, previous studies of Korean fishing villages did not pay attention to sea life as a significant conceptual category within the system of cultural knowledge of the Korean fishermen. Furthermore, ethnographic studies of Korean culture do not normally analyze the semantic domain of animals (including fish) by applying the ethnoscientific approach. This study provides data from an ethnographic case study in order to answer the question" how does the Korean society look at and use plants and animals as the experience world?" This study reveals the fishermen`s folk knowledge in relation to sea animals in the West Sea of Korea. The goal of this paper is to analyze the cultural specificity of how various croakers (Family Sciaenidae) are conceptualized as the representative fishes in the West Sea and to apply an ethnoichthyological approach. This study examines four aspects of ethnoichthyology. First, folk terms were collected for any variety of fish which is recognized as a kind of jogu (croakers), and the folk taxonomy was revealed. Five kinds of croakers are recognized and classified into one generic taxon and five specific taxa. The category jogu is a polytypic generic taxon, and it means that the fishes are very important for the fishermen`s culture and for their conceptualization of the sea as the ecological environment. Second, by comparing the folk classification of the croakers as the generic taxon with the scientific classification of Family Sciaenidae, I tried to expand the understanding of the cultural categorization that the fishermen apply to the Family Sciaenidae. The fishermen identified five genera and six species of Family Sciaenidae, and classified them into two generic taxa (jogu and mine) and five specific ones. The Korean fishermen do not identify the brown croakers (Miichthys miiuy) as belonging to the category of croakers. Third, by doing the componential analysis of the five folk terms for croakers, I tried to reveal the distinctive features by which the fishes are identified. The fishermen identified them according to seven dimensions of semantic contrast. Further, it is understood that the yellow croakers (Larimichthys polyactis) are the cognitive focus as the prototype of the category, and that the brown croakers are classified into the different folk generic taxon by the color and the size. Fourth, I examined the changes in use and in cognition of the croakers in relation to the ecological changes occurring in the sea and impacting the fishing grounds. The large-sized croakers like the yellow croakers (Larimichthys polyactis) and the large yellow croakers (Larimichthys crocea) have been utilized for the food assemblage on the Korean ancestral rites table. But they have disappeared in the fishing ground as least since 1970s. On the other hand, the fishermen can catch the yellow drums (Nibea albiflora) still in the sea. And so we can understand that the yellow drums have been revaluated as a fish appropriate for the rites according to the size, the color, and the taste, and now can be used in place of the yellow croakers.
