A Black writer invariably faces a dual role of both writer and spokesman. If he is deeply committed to his causes, his artistic side may be overlooked. He has to keep a balance between the dilemma of artist-propaganda and didacticism-entertainment.
The three plays analyzed in this paper are: Mulatto by Hughes, A Raisin in the Sun by Hansberry and Who's Got His Own by Milner. Although there is 30-year-gap between Hughes' and Milner's plays, the situation for the Blacks has not changed much during those years in America.
All three writers handle human agony in modern society and man's continuous efforts to regain his integrity and hopes for the future. Their protest against white society is grave, but they do not make their plays a revolutionary weapon for the race problems.
Mulatto deals with miscegenation, A Raisin in the Sun with Black manhood, while Milner's play is concerned with the Black experience in the past, present and what it will be in the future.
Upon analyzing these three plays, I have come to the following conclusions:
1. A realistic presentation which reminds one of Ibsen or Chekhov is used.
2. Each play develops upon the method of retrospective analysis, that is, those events that had taken place in the past become the causes for what is happening on the stage while they are being analyzed in retrospect.
3. A strong mother stands as the center of the family, often making a bridge for the father and the children.
4. Each play has one or two so-called "typical white characters."
5. The son of the family reaches his manhood in the course of the play with the help of his mother whose love and understanding awaken him to self-realization.
6. In view of the past-present-future of Black history, each play looks forward to certain positive expectations, the exception maybe being Mulatto, in spite of the present misery and apparent desperation.
