唐末 周朴 시의 내용 고찰 = A Study on the Contents of Zhou-pu’s Poetryin the Late-Tang Dynasty

In Liuyi Shihua(六一詩話), Ouyang Xiu(歐陽修) included Zheng Gu(鄭谷) and Zhou Pu(周朴) as representative poets of the Late Tang style. Of the two, Zhou Pu was a suffering poet who was active in the Late-Tang Dynasty and wrote poetry in a style similar to that of the slightly earlier Jia Dao (賈島 779-843). His exact year of birth is not known, but the fact that his death is about 30 years apart suggests that he may have overlapped with Jia Dao. Later, Wantang-Style(晩唐體) was one of the most popular poets in the early Northern Song poetry group. From this series of changes and developments in poetry, it can be concluded that the lineage of poets who pursued the style of austere poetry passed from Jia dao to Zhou Pu, and from Zhou Pu to the Northern Song Wantang-Style.
Based on the historical significance of the poems and Ouyang Xiu’s evaluation, this paper closely examines 45 poems by Zhou Pu between Jia Dao and Wantang-Style in the early Northern Song period. In particular, when analyzing Zhou Pu’s poems by focusing on their content and thematic consciousness, his poems reveal the poet’s life situation and experience, life orientation, and living environment. Through this study, we found that, unlike other poets of the Late-Tang Dynasty, Zhou Pu’s poetry contains a variety of sanctions and a wide range of themes. According to the specific content, we were able to categorize them into the following areas: his desire to enter the court, his regret that he was not selected for a government position, his relationship with the monks in the temple, his concern for the country and society, and his longing for home and friends. In other words, it boils down to the conclusion that Zhou Pu’s poem is quite rich in content and themes.
In this article, we have focused on the content analysis of the Late-Tang dynasty’s Zhou Pu poems, which have not received much attention as a subject of study in Chinese classical poetry to date, and we believe that further analysis of the poems’ formal achievements will deepen our understanding of Zhou Pu’s poetry. It is hoped that the present study will serve as an opportunity to rediscover the poets and poetry of the Late-Tang Dynasty, a period that has been neglected in literary history.
