상담과 심리치료에 있어서의 宗敎와 그리스도 靈性의 문제 = The issues of religion and spirituality in counseling and psychotherapy

The relationship between religion or spirituality and psychological growth has long been a topic of debate among couselors and psychotherapists. Some of the most famous names in the psychological history have taken a stance on this issues. There are many counselors and psychotherapists who think religion and spirituality are detrimental to human growth and development. Ellis has been unequivocal in asserting that 'devout religiosity' leads to emotional disorder. On the other hand, Bergin noted that theistic values could have beneficial effects and may be useful in counseling and psychotherapy. Assumptions, beliefs, and values held by counselors and psychotherapists play a critical role in the counseling process. Therefore it is very important to investigate the impacts of religion and spirituality on human growth and development. The objective of this study is to investigate the impacts of religion and spirituality on the psychological growth.
Although there is no clear consensus regarding the impacts of religion on psychological growth or mental health, it does appear that there is agreement that religion is nat a homogeneous, unidimensional construct. Currently the most important body of literature pertaining to the religious orientation and mental health is grounded in Allport and Ross analysis. Over the last 25 years there have been a plethora of research on the intrinsic/extrinsic religious orientation. Many authors ground that a positive correlation between intrinsic religious orientation and mental health(competent perception and expression of feeling; freedom, autonomy and responsibility; integration and coping; self-awareness and personal growth; mature frame of orientation) and a negative correlation between extrinsic religious orientation and mental health. And many investigators found that increases in extrinsic religious orientation were associated with increases in prejudice, trait-anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
Contemporary authentic Christian spirituality is holistic, not limited to an exclusively individualistic 'care of soul', and hold in balance a sense of the transcendent as well as a sense of the imminent. Christian spirituality presupposes a way of life. The Christian way of life is a life of discipleship. The call to the discipleship is a call to belong to a community. Christian spirituality is can not be limited to self-denial. Spiritual development and personal maturity are not same thing, but their relationship can be reciprocal; one can spur the other. A mature life, including a valid perception and acceptance and discernment, powerfully contributes to the growth of a spiritually oriented person. On the other hand, to grow in faith and trust, to reduce much of the self-defeating anxiety on which pathology builds.
