한국어 교육을 위한 효 문화의 현대적 고찰 = A Modern Review of Hyo Culture for Korean Language Education

The demand for Korean language is steadily increasing due to the expansion of Korea's national power and the spread of Korean wave culture. The purpose of learning Korean is also diversifying. Korean language proficiency and Korean language learners are also increasing. The change in the system of Korean language education has led to the need for capable communication like Koreans, beyond just speaking and reading. Korean language learning also needs to be combined with culture. It must be able to represent Korea and have a universal cultural element. What should be universal in the world should be an emotion that exists in any country and that humans can accept.
It is effective to meet these conditions. Hyo(filial piety) is unique to Korea that has been passed down for thousands of years. However, modern life has changed and values of hyo are also changing. Even if the culture and ideology itself of filial piety are inherited, a new paradigm must be sought out of the Confucian or Buddhist framework. The most suitable for this is the hyo of Christianity. I will examine the hyo of each period in Korea, compare the hyo of Confucianism and Buddhism with the hyo of Christianity in the traditional hyo of Korea, and emphasize the necessity of Christian hyo. ‘ hyo refers to the sincerity of one's children's parents. In more detail, hyo can be defined as first, the foundation of character formation, second, the spirit of love and harmony, and third, the heart of gratitude for grace.
Confucianism, Buddhism, and Christianity both emphasize and teach hyo. The hyo is an ideology that keeps the norms and doctrines of human life, and the traditional filial values take a unilateral direction, an authoritative direction, and the nurturing and reverence of parents and children in a unilateral way. The modern era is an era of two-way communication, not one-way communication. Confucianism and Buddhism's traditional hyo emphasizes unilateral hyo. Although there are some two-way elements, Christian thought is strong in teaching about filial piety in both directions. Traditional hyo still exists, but hyo with Christian philosophy is being newly formed in the modern aspect. Therefore, Korean hyo and culture need to be reinterpreted from a Christian standpoint. If the 500 years of Goryeo were the “hyo” of Buddhism, and the 500 years of Joseon was the “hyo” of Confucianism, then the 500 years of Korea could be the “hyo” of Christianity.
