동해안 지역 어촌민속 연구의 동향과 과제 = Trends and Challenges in East Coast Fishing Village Folklore Research

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 동해안 어촌지역을 대상으로 조사ㆍ연구된 민속학과 인접 학문의 주요 성과를 반성적으로 검토하고, 이를 토대로 향후 연구 방향을 제시한 것이다. 1970년대 이래 동해안 어촌민속 연구는 다양한 주제와 관점의 연구가 축적되면서 양적ㆍ질적 성장을 이뤘다. 그렇지만 공동체 신앙과 설화, 노반계 등 특정 대상을 중심으로 연구가 지속될 뿐, 많은 주제의 연구는 일회성으로 그쳐 내실이 약하다. 아울러 특정 지역과 대상을 중심으로 발견되는 연구의 편중 현상도 발견할 수 있었다. 이런 상황에서 바다를 중심으로 하는 해양적 시각과 마을을 중심으로 하는 육지적 시각, 어촌의 정체성과 민속학의 지형을 동시에 고려함으로써, 몇 가지 연구 방향성을 제시했다.
① 조선시대부터 일제강점기를 거쳐 산업화 시기까지 어촌지역의 역사적 접근을 강화해야 할 것이다. ② 연구의 시각적ㆍ공간적 범위를 확장하기 위해 학문적 색깔이 다른 연구자들의 공동조사가 대안으로 제시될 수 있으며, 어촌의 사회적ㆍ경제적 특성을 고려해 공간적으로 좀 더 넓은 범위의 연구가 진행돼야 한다. ③ 바다 환경을 고려해 지역적으로 다양한 층위를 이루고 있는 어로 양상을 살피고, 어업의 범위를 가공과 유통의 영역까지 확장하며, 여성 어민 등 소외된 어업 주체에 대한 관심이 필요하다. ④ 사회적 측면에서 어촌의 사회관계와 정치질서의 변화, 국가 정책의 수용에 따른 어촌민의 대응과 사회 변화 등을 주요 과제로 삼을 수 있다. ⑤ 어촌의 현재성 또는 사회를 둘러싼 각종 현실문제에 더 적극적으로 관심을 기울여야 한다. ⑥ 어촌민속 연구의 토대가 되는 어촌민속지의 체계를 주제 중심적 방법으로 전환함으로써, 어촌민속학의 지평을 확대할 수 있다.
동해안 지역의 어촌민속 연구는 방법론이나 관점, 시공간, 대상 등 그 외연을 지속적으로 확장해 나가야 할 것이다. 다양한 사례와 관점이 녹아있는 연구가 축적된다면 민속학에서 어촌민속학을 하나의 영역으로 체계화하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 생각한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article critically examines the major achievements of folklore studies and related disciplines based on research conducted in fishing villages along the East Coast of Korea. It also outlines future research directions. Since the 1970s, research on the folklore of East Coast fishing villages has grown both quantitatively and qualitatively, accumulating studies on various topics and perspectives. However, the focus has largely remained on specific subjects such as communal rituals, folklore tales, and nobang-gye, while studies on many other topics have remained one-off efforts, lacking depth. Furthermore, there is an observable bias toward specific regions and topics in existing research.
In light of these challenges, this study proposes several research directions, taking into account both maritime perspectives centered on the sea and terrestrial perspectives focused on villages, as well as the identity of fishing villages and the broader landscape of folklore studies.
① Strengthening historical approaches to fishing village regions, covering the period from the Joseon Dynasty through Japanese colonial rule to the era of industrialization.
② To expand the visual and spatial scope of research, collaborative investigations involving researchers with diverse academic perspectives can be proposed as an alternative. Additionally, studies covering a broader spatial scope should be conducted, taking into account the social and economic characteristics of fishing villages.
③ Examining diverse layers of fishing practices in different regions while considering the marine environment, broadening the scope of fishing beyond production to include processing and distribution, and paying attention to marginalized subjects such as women fishers.
④ Addressing social aspects, including changes in social relations and political order within fishing villages, as well as villagers' responses to national policies and resulting social transformations.
⑤ Actively engaging with contemporary issues and real-world problems surrounding fishing village societies.
⑥ Transitioning the structure of fishing village ethnographies-the foundation of fishing village folklore studies-to a more theme-centered approach to expand the horizons of the discipline.
Research on the folklore of fishing villages along the East Coast must continue to broaden its methodological and conceptual scope, encompassing perspectives of time, space, and subject matter. The accumulation of studies enriched with diverse cases and viewpoints will contribute to systematizing fishing village folklore as a distinct field within folklore studies.
