1. Farm Villages and the Attitude toward Festivals: The fundamental, underlying view of festivals in China is reflected in the ceremonies that take place at Chinese New Year`s, the beginning of the lunar-calendar spring. The ceremonies are expressive of "death and renewal." As winter turns oppressively cold, they in 陰 ("female, dark, passive") principle increases, reaching its full. Tilling the soil becomes impossible, food becomes scarce, and child-bearing becomes more difficult. The community`s survival enters a dangerous period. Peasants confront the threat by performing festival ceremonies, sounding gongs, and performing dances, all in order to awaken a slumbering spring and summon warm weather to the village, and thereby bring about conditions for ploughing. Those village elders whose responsibility for the life of the community has been diminishing, retire; younger members of the community take center stage and carry on responsibility for the community`s existence. It is through these spring-festival ceremonies - primitive farm-society ones of "death and renewal" that take place at the lunar new year (chunjie春節) and fifteen days later on the first full moon of the new year (yuanxiao元宵) -that the community`s weakened life-force is revitalized. For society at this time, such ceremonies promoting agricultural activity are indispensible to maintaining the community`s very life. 2. Regional Market places and the Attitude toward Festivals At regional marketplaces as well, festivals take place on the lunar new year and on the first full moon. At the request of market merchants, villagers file by in a parade that is replete with music and dance from village ceremonies. Such events are promoted by merchants as a way to inject new life into flagging commerce. In other words, even though such ceremonies are not as essential for commerce as is the advent of spring for agriculture, merchants appropriate the spring ceremonies of "death and renewal," long sustained by agricultural society, in order to revive business. 3. Regional Government and the Attitude toward Festivals: The same occurs with prefectural and provincial officials in cities. At the beginning of the lunar new year, the festival ceremony known as "dressing up for spring" (banchun扮春) is carried out. Villagers from the area form groups, whether of lion or dragon dancers, mixed-sex dance-troupes sounding waist-drums, long-legged stilt-walkers, or groups simulating water creatures such as fish or crabs, as well as boats. Entering the city, they assemble in the square and carry out a group performance that is called "dance of fish and dragons that snake along" (yulongmanyanwu魚龍蔓延舞). The underlying intent of provincial government officials is to revive weakened political strength via such New Year-festival ceremonies. In other words, town officials as well have appropriated primitive agriculture`s "death and renewal" ceremonies. 4. Central Government and the Attitude toward Festivals: In recent years, the United Nations has encouraged governments to preserve their intangible, non-material culture as part of its "cultural heritage" campaign. In response to this, the Chinese government has presented the country`s farm-village festivals as its "cultural heritage." But since governments, too, weaken over time, arguably one facet of the current advocacy of "cultural heritage" is the use of farm-village ceremonies by the Chinese state in the attempt to breathe new life into declining political power. Put briefly, in modern city life where commerce, manufacturing, and urban culture have made considerable advances, the attitude toward festivals remains largely intact, inherited from an agricultural society that dates from primitive times. In industrial societies, New Year-festival ceremonies may have lost theft significance in terms of economic production; but, that they are carried out in so many urban areas, is owing to the fact that the memory of their magical authority has not died out from human collective mentality
