Introduction: Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the most frequently isolated coagulase-negative staphylococcal species from humans and animals. Pigs are also known to harbour S. epidermidis usually in their upper respiratory tracts. Although antibiotic resistance among pig-associated S. aureus strains has often been investigated, there is very limited information on antibiotic resistant S. epidermidis, especially methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE), among pig populations in Korea.
Methods: A total of 1009 swab samples (114 swabs from farm environments; 760 swabs from pigs; 135 swabs from farm workers) were subjected for isolation of S. epidermidis. Using 73 S. epidermidis strains (13 MRSE and 60 MSSE strains, respectively), we examined: (i) presence of mecA gene and SCCmec type; (ii) susceptibilities to 10 different antibiotics using disk diffusion or microdilution methods according to CLSI guidelines.
Results: Almost all the S. epidermidis isolates (72/73) exhibited resistance to at least one of the antibiotics tested and 91% were multiresistant. Importantly, 13/73 S. epidermidis isolates (17%) were resistant to methicillin (9, 3, and 1 MRSE isolates from pigs, farm workers, and farm environments, respectively). All the MRSE isolates were positive for mecA and oxacillin MICs ranged from 8-128 μg/ml. Overall, MRSE isolates tend to have higher levels of resistance to most antibiotics, especially to chloramphenicol, cefoxitin, and tetracycline.
Conclusions: Our findings suggested that there are relatively high levels of antimicrobial resistance among S. epidermidis isolates in pigs, farm workers, and farm environment. Of note, pigs may serve as a reservoir for antibiotic-resistant S. epidermidis or antibiotic resistance genes for human infections.
